Increasingly feeling like episodes of a TV season where they individually are fairly decent but it is the narrative arc of the season that is more interesting.

Man this series doesn't stop getting good!Jim Butcher knows how to keep it engaging by mixing in new and old characters to keep readers on their toes. There is so much character development, plot, imagery, and all around badassery. I have nothing but positive things to say about the tenth installment in the Dresden Files. Mab calls in a favor that Dresden is bound to assist with and he's none to happy about it. He has to find and bail out his nemesis, the crime lord Marcone. If that weren't bad enough there are some majorly bad demons in town. Last time he barely managed against a handful, now there are more than a dozen in town. Good thing Harry Dresden is used to going up against horrible odds. I can't wait for the next one!

I feel like my reviews of the Dresden Files sound repetitious, but so be it: Butcher continues to write an enthralling, complicated series. Other series feel like stale re-hashes after a few books. Here, everything that happened previously matters, and the plot is a magnificent knot of villains.

This is one of Butcher's faster paced novels. We also see a lot of previous charaters from the other novels. I liked the new twists presented, and hope that the ones that don't yet get explained will come up in the next book. Really looking forward to it. :)

Hands-down, this is my favorite book in the series. Maybe it's because the monster of the week is the Billy Goats Gruff. Maybe it's because catnip and a donut end up playing pivotal roles in the plot. Maybe it's because the cast of characters is diverse and rounded. Maybe it's because, with hover for spoiler finally out of his head, Dresden is no longer prone to intense and sickening bouts of malicious violence. Maybe it's because the writing is captivating--Butcher is quite good at striking the balance between showing and telling, and he "shows" with all five senses. Describing the smells and textures of a scene do a tremendous amount to bring it to life. Maybe it's just because this book was my intro to the series.

But mostly it's because Small Favor captures a perfect balance of humanity, humor, and pathos. In each book, Butcher has become a better writer: the characters are more rounded, the writing is more graceful, and the plots are more intricate without losing the overall flow and pace. However, with each book (excepting #3, where it was hard to become attached to the characters who bite the dust), it seems like the books get darker and the endings sadder.

Small Favor is the optimal point: the writing is great, the characters are strong, and the book is not yet so dark that the humor feels out of place. While the book is fun, it also captures something more. When Harry experiences distrust from his friends and allies, his pain and sense of betrayal are poignant and heartrending. When he faces tragedy and ends up crying out against a god he doesn't have faith in, his pain is so well portrayed that a scene which is objectively both mawkish and embarrassingly corny instead inexplicably works. hover for spoiler

This is a book about relationships: Harry's irreverent badinage with his brother, his fatherly protectiveness of the young girl Ivy, his mixture of friendship, jealousy, and flirtation with Murphy, his newfound shyness and ineptness with Anastasia Luccio, and his need for affirmation from the father figure of Michael.

The cast of characters is large, but not too much to handle. The characters are round: everyone from Marcone the crime lord to Dierdre the hellion show both cruelty and kindness, at least to some extent. Michael, Harry's trusted friend and a Knight of the Cross, is human, lovable, and righteous--all without being preachy and holier-than-thou.

The only bad news is that this isn't a good book to start with. At least two major plot points needed for solving the mystery require knowledge from previous books. My advice? Start at #7 and get to this book as soon as you can.

Small FavorThe Dresden Files, Book #10by Jim Butcher (@longshotauthor)narrated by James Marsters(P) 2008, Penguin Audio13 hours, 50 minutesHarry Dresden, White Council Wizard and Warden (and the only practicing Wizard listed in the Chicago phone book!) repays the second of three favors owed to the Winter Queen, by rescuing crime lord Johnny Marcone from the forces that have kidnapped Marcone from his own panic room. The reasons and the method for the abduction, as well as the Winter Queen’s interest, are the substance of the story; but needless to say, Fae politics and grasps for power are at the heart of it all. This is one of the better Dresden Files novels in that the writing is solid with few if any continuity errors (after listening to few Dresden Files, you learn to just roll with it and get to the point of the scene or action) and the cliches feel more natural to the dialogue. Karrin Murphy, a Chicago police officer and ally of Harry’s, returns to her recognizable self: a person of moral character and of the law, which had been distorted in Blood Rites (The Dresden Files #6. Fans of the series will recognize all the usual suspects as well as many of the pop culture references - from Shakespeare to Tolkien to Hollywood ;-)Despite an over-the-top showdown near the end of the book, Small Favor still feels rather subdued by comparison to the rest of the series thus far. At one point, Harry Dresden, heading into what is sure to be a confrontation thinks, “Where was the drama? Where were the explosions, the howling screams, the deafening sound track?” and; the listener may wonder as well. Is it the writing (lack of vitality?), the narration (uninspired?) {Or me (jaded?) That said, by the end of Small Favor, I was fully engaged and yes, I cried a little. OK, a lot (8 Kleenexes.)}From the start, with Storm Front, James Marsters has been Harry Dresden. Interestingly, Small Favor was recorded at about the same time as Blood Rites (#6) in 2008 but the performances in Small Favor far outstrip those in Blood Rites. Marsters is more in command of the story, able to imbue the right tone to “Fuego” (fire spell) as the scenes’ moods dictated; and infuse the characters with humor and pathos. There were times that Marsters didn’t seem to have much to work with, but the drag was temporary and short.OTHER: I dnloaded a digital audio edition of Small Favor (by Jim Butcher; narrated by James Marsters) from the now defunct digital dnload site, weread4you.com. They used to have amazing sales and I purchased a number of The Dresden Files audiobooks to fill in the gaps in my collection. To be honest, if I hadn’t bought them, I probably would have dropped the series by now; but I did and so I didn’t! I receive no monies, goods or services in exchange for reviewing the product and/or mentioning any of the persons or companies that are or may be implied in this post.

Very satisfying. I've been getting worried because this is the 10th book in the series and quality often starts to suffer by this point, but they do just keep getting better.

Another fast paced and fun story from Butcher, showcasing our favorite wizard-detective enduring more dangerous shenanigans.

I thought this one was fun. It brought back a lot of characters that have been seen before. I like the stuff with the Denarians and the Knights of the Cross. The end was a bit off (and bittersweet), but it wasn't due to bad writing, just a weird plot development I'm not entirely OK with.

As usual, this entry in the Harry Dresden series was full of non-stop action, witty come-backs and lots of scary monsters. Reading this series is like eating a really, really good chocolate chip cookie -- as soon as you finish, you want another one!

Loved the character of Harry Dresden - witty, sarcastic, tough guy with a soft heart. But, I found it difficult to follow the plot. I realized that it is book 6 in a series. Hmm.... I think I need to go back and read the first couple.

Book Info: Genre: Urban FantasyReading Level: Adult Recommended for: Fans of Urban FantasyMy Thoughts: The Dresden Files books that deal with the Sidhe always amuse me. I can’t say why I find them particularly amusing, other than Butcher does a fabulous job of following the traditional faery lore, but I tend to enjoy these the most.I loved Sanya’s reaction to Murphy. “I like her... she is tiny, but fierce.” Tiny but fierce women seem to appeal to Russians, as least based upon my limited experience of my tiny but fierce Russian mother-in-law, who is also on her third husband, and whom I quite adore. Sanya’s descriptions of what it’s like to be a black man in Russia are right on; my husband says there are hardly any. (And no one call me on the PC bandwagon; you can’t call a black Russian an African-American. Maybe an African-Russian? *shrug* But not all black people are of African descent, you know—he might be Moorish for all I know—and I can’t make any sort of stab at Sanya’s genealogy, so I just have to go with that.)I also enjoyed the gruffs. Those are some cool faeries, I tell ya, especially Elder Brother and Eldest Brother Gruff. We also learn more about the Denarians, Archangels, the Knights of the Cross... Butcher’s world is very complex, and it’s coming together nicely now. Folks who haven’t read the full series might miss some of these details, but I’m enjoying watching it all ratchet together like a jigsaw puzzle. Great stuff.Disclosure: I purchased this book in hardcover for myself, and backup e-book copy. All opinions are my own.Synopsis: Harry Dresden's life finally seems to be calming down-until a shadow from the past returns. Mab, monarch of the Sidhe Winter Court, calls in an old favor from Harry—one small favor that will trap him between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and that will strain his skills—and loyalties—to their very limits.

In which our intrepid hero Harry meets the billy goats gruff, plays with Mab, the fallen angels, and involves everyone he knows in a massive intrigue yet again.

More of the same old, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And Harry finally gets some, but we all know how that's likely to turn out.

Book 10 of the series, what a ride. Get ready for a very big roller coaster ride of characters and events. The feel of the books are changing as they progress in the series, but for the good. I love how the characters have been built into the stories and how they come in and out of the story lines instead of them being one offs for a few books. I really like how Harry has a family now. While they may not all be blood related, they're always there when he needs them. Whether or not he actually verbalizes it, they show up and cover him even if it means being willing to risk their lives. The only character that hasn't really been brought back much is Susan, Harry's last love interest. Though a new relationship seems to be developing between Harry and an unlikely powerful woman. I am excited to see where that relationship goes, as it could be quite the romance.

The tenth volume in the popular on-going Dresden Files series finds Chicago wizard Harry Dresden enjoying some down time between crises. Quiet times never last, and Harry soon finds himself under attack from mystical assailants, while also having to repay a favor to Mab, the Queen of the Winter Court of the Sidhe. Allies and enemies keep popping up to make things even more complicated, including a group of Fallen Angels who may be trying to bring John Marcone, Chicago's biggest mob leader, into their midst. With his friends, the Knights of the Cross, Sgt. Karrin Murphy, mercenary bodyguard Kincaid, and his vampiric half-brother Thomas backing him, Dresden finds himself opposing a mystical power play that could have permanent global repercussions. All while Chicago endures one of the worst white-out blizzards its ever faced! The Dresden Files books will be a hit with anyone who is a fan of the hip, pop-culture sensibility of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or who doesn't mind a hefty dose of spell slinging with their noirish detectives. One caveat: If you've never read any of the Dresden Files books before, don't start with Small Favor -- there's way too many returning characters to enjoy without knowing how they fit into Harry's world from previous adventures. The series starts with Storm Front.

Dresden finally gets to have sex again and it happens...after the book ends? What happened to the hot vampire sex? I enjoy all of the Dresden books at about the same level, and devour them like a pint of yummy (in my case, soy) ice cream, all in one sitting. Probably because I've read all of them within the space of a couple of months, I do tire of the same things being explained over and over again. If you like the Dresden books, you won't be disappointed, but regardless of all the 'splaining, I wouldn't drop into this series midway through.

In Small Favor Harry is called to a crime scene by friend and sometimes work college Murphy. A building has been destroyed and its front seems to have been cut off cleanly. But as always this is just the start, and pretty quickly Harry has found himself smack in the middle of a whole lot of trouble.I dont know how Jim Butcher does it after ten books but he managed to write another roller coaster of a book which had me turning the page at blistering speed to find out what happens next. The reader gets to see a lot of character and story development in this book and a lot more "hints" about Harry and his past/future were dropped. A highly recommended book but start at the beginning if you are new to the series.

This the second of Butcher's Dresden Files books that I've read, and I have to say it was a thrilling ride! At first I felt like I might not be up for the ride, as it seemed like it was going to be bumpy from the very beginning and I thought that it would be too painful a journey if the main character was traumatized from page one so to speak, but it leveled out and got interesting very fast. The Dresden file cast is a finely wrought group, and after 10 books, Butcher knows them all pretty well. Through two thirds of the book I was thinking about it a lot and trying to figure out what would happen and historically, how it would happen, but the ending was a nice finish to the book and I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of the adventures of Chicago's resident wizard.

I am jumping around in the Dresden Files Series. I just can’t get enough of these stories. If I’m counting correctly, this is number ten for the series. By now, you know the characters and Harry’s penchant for getting into trouble and making witty wisecracks . . . at the wrong time. Despite the formula be predictable, this installment still delivers a well-deserved thrill. Slightly below par for the Dresden files and still above par for lots of other works. I’d call this just under a full four stars.

Plenty of action, amusing and downright snarky first-person narrative, wizards in Chicago on the rampage. Explanations were okay as reminders to series followers, but incomplete and somewhat muddled for new readers. R for language and suggestive sexuality, but not hard-core.

Fun, as always, but not as compelling as the last one. Possibly the difficulty focusing the eyes affected my enjoyment. On the other hand, the author very clearly and carefully planted a clue in the first or second chapter that I totally missed, as did Dresden, until most of the way through the book. Very well done. I went back to review it, and found it in hindsight. Even warned that something went wonky, I doubt if other readers will pick it up. At first, it feels like "lots happening, but plot not going anywhere" and then you find out that what has been going on is not the whole story. Second half more satisfying than the first.

This is a nonstop roller coaster of a ride, exactly what you expect from the Dresden Files. Another episode in the how-can-we-hurt-Harry-some-more-and-yet-he-still-makes-jokes series. I love all these characters and recommend this book to anyone who's read the series and this series to anyone who likes mystery and urban fantasy all rolled into one.

I love these books - Harry Dresden is an interesting and complicated character, who always tries to do the right thing, but not always in the right way. He owes Queen Mab, and she ask him a seemingly small thing, which has huge consequences

Summary: Queen Mab calls on Dresdyn for payback of the second of the three favors he owes. Before too long he is hip deep in deception and intrigue. Really, just another day for Dresdyn. The Take Away: I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to learn that total of 20 books are planned. Thrilled beyond measure. I'm already planning a back to back read through. It would go better if I had copies of the kooks. Must look into that.I love how nonchalant Harry is about the bad guys chasing him, again. I like Molly as a foil to his wizarding strength and Charity as a moral compass. Butcher really handles the massive quantity of secondary characters better tan most authors I read. I don't forget who they are and they continue to have important - not gratuitous - roles.Considering that this book really is the midpoint of the series, Harry has a lot of adventure ahead of him. Enough, I believe, that he just might take up that sword.
