- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Everything everyone ever told me about this book is true. I adored it. Tip was fantastic and having the tale written as an essay from her point of view really let her personality shine through. J.Lo was almost just as great, as were Pig, the different BOOBs, the Chief, Tipsmom, and the rest. The illustrations and comics were important to the story and were adorable. Had I children, I'd read this to them. Since I don't, I'll most certainly be gifting it. It's fun, it's wildly entertaining, and it's rooted in the realities of the world and doesn't shy away from things like racism but makes them completely understandable and approachable for children (and anyone) to think about. So much fun!
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Originally posted at The Wandering Fangirl. What a hilarious, delightful little book. Gratuity Tucci has to write an essay discussing what the true meaning of Smekday, the day aliens conquered Earth, means to her. Thus begins the hilarious and often sweet story of Gratuity's journey to find her mother, accompanied by an alien who calls himself J.Lo and her mother's cat. The adventure is huge, the aliens hilarious, the action thrilling, and every picture and drawing littered about made this an incredibly charming read. I totally recommend it to everyone.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Loved, loved, loved this J book. The illustrations are just as engaging as the story. Characters wonderful. Adults may be several steps ahead of the young readers, particularly if the youngsters haven't been introduced to UFology, but if you have a budding sf reader, take the time to discuss the "events" in Roswell, NM!
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5Well, I gave it the old college try but 225 pages is enough for me. There are moments of goofy humor but overall, aliens and disaster just aren't enough to hold me.
12/1-24/2012 Narrated by Bahni Turpin. Gave the audiobook a try since it won the Odyssey Award and that is what the star rating is for. Turpin's reading got me more into the story than the print alone (although I still can't get into stories about space aliens). Her voicing is lithe and flexible, an entertaining accomplishment given that she interprets not just humans, but the Boov and Gorg aliens. A highlight is the sweet befuddlement of the Boov alien JLo. The girl Gratuity is smart and determined, but sassy and humorous, too. - Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5The Boov have taken over earth, and one of them, accidently, has insulted a vicious race called the Gorg who have come to destroy. Gratuity Tucci is 11-years-old, and with her Boov friend J-Lo, is determined to save humankind.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Great sci-fi humor! Gratuity "Tip" Tucci has to write an essay for the National Time Capsule Contest. Her first effort at explaining what "Smekday" means to her gets returned with a note from the teacher asking for more details... and so she decides she might as well give the whole story a go! There have been multiple alien invasions of Earth (the Boov and the Gorg), and all humans have been forced to relocate to Florida and then Arizona. Her mother has disappeared, and Tip decides to drive to Florida to find her. On the way she befriends an odd Boov mechanic whom she names "J. Lo," who combines a Boov scooter with her mother's car to create "Slushious," the hovercar with completely backwards controls. The two of them come up with a wildly bizarre plan to save the Earth from the Gorg invasion and get rid of the Boov at the same time, but there are a few problems along the way. Illustrated with clippings from newspapers, pictures and "photos", this is hilariously funny, and will keep you turning the pages to find out what ELSE is going to happen to this unlikely pair! 6th grade and up.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Good little science fiction political satire. Funny.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5A great YA read with some wonderful metaphors and biting social commentary. Gratuity Tucci, aka Tip, is separated from her mother when the aliens invade and announce that everyone in the US is going to have to move to Florida because the Boov are going to use the rest of the country. When Tip meets J.Lo, a Boov in trouble, her real adventures begin. Funny and touching, and overall wacky joy to read.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5The narrator rocked this audio. Lots of fun humor and large appeal for kids. One of my new favortie recs for kids that are ready to graduate from Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5A most entertaining read - or in my case, a listen, as I heard it on audiobook and thus missed the illustrations. Rex has a slightly demented imagination that makes this book both amusing and original too. JLo the Boov is quite adorable. In a freakish, octopus-kind-of-way. Filled with social commentary, oddball humour and madcap craziness, this is a book that should be enjoyed by young and adult alike, and one for parents to enjoy with their children.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5This book is actually a very very long essay written by Middle School student Gratuity Tucci for a contest, the winning essay of which will be placed in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years - in 2113. In it, Gratuity (Tip to her friends) describes the invasion of the Boov and the subsequent relocation of all humans to Florida (and then to Arizona, as the Boov decide they want Florida for themselves). Tip's mother was taken by the aliens early on, and so 12-year-old Tip takes her cat and drives (yes, drives) off in search of her. Early on, she meets up with a stray handyman Boov, who reengineers her car to fly. Gradually, Tip and the Boov, who calls himself J.Lo, become uneasy friends and allies, as they avoid the Boov, meet all sorts of strange humans, and then find themselves dealing with an even more fearsome set of aliens, the Gorg.
This is an extremely funny book - the dialogue, whether tongue-in-cheek or absolutely outrageous, is snappy and Tip and J.Lo are both loveable, if often irascible and just plain nuts. J.Lo speaks English with a distinctly Boovian and very ludicrous accent - when he first meets Tip and is bluffing her, he says, "Then...then...I will have onto shoot with my gun!" and when that doesn't work, he tries "NO GUN! So I will have to...have to...SHOOT FORTH THE LASERS FROM MY EYEBALLS!" Tip carries around an antique polaroid camera, and so the book is illustrated with drawings depicting the polaroids, messily taped into the book.
First-rate, tip-top SF for all ages - Read This Book!! - Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5This is not the type of book I would usually pick up. Even as a child, I wouldn’t have chosen this one. I know they say not to judge a book by it’s cover but, lets face it, when people look for books the cover is the first thing we see. This book blew me away. It was not at all what I expected. I was expecting a book featuring a boy or young man as the main character. I was surprised when the main character was a spunky eleven year old girl who was retelling how she and her alien friend saved the planet. While the book focused on the invasion of the planet by an alien species, there was a lot of subtext that can be used to encourage thoughtful discussions on treaty rights, war, and tolerance. Not only that, it was funny! I can only recall one other book* that made me nearly shoot coffee out my nose. As an adult, that is not the same thrill as it would be to a 10 year old, but still, three words…”Devastating Eye Lasers.”This is a great book and everyone needs to read it, especially girls.I must note that I did take advantage of the audio book version that was available at my local library, which was brilliantly narrated by Bahni Turpin. I had to go back to the book itself to appreciate the details of the small comics that were ‘contributed by J.Lo.’*The other book that always makes me laugh? The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. I have read that a dozen times. I still crack up.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5If I had to describe this book in a word, I'd call it a romp. It's fun, it's funny, it's a fast-paced adventure. And it's very clever. Too clever, in fact; one gets the impression that the author is very impressed with himself, and cracks himself up with how witty and clever he can be.
Somewhere on GoodReads, I saw a description of a book (don't recall which one) as "it's like a friend's little brother--he's really funny and entertaining for a little while, and then you want him to go away." That's an excellent synopsis of this book. - Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Adam Rex is a prime example of an author who can bring amazing depth to a riotously funny story. There were times when I found myself convulsed in giggles listening to the Smekday audio (which Bahni Turpin does an amazing job of narrating), but the story also made me think. Parallels to the European treatment of Native Americans abound, but that's just the easiest issue to identify; there's plenty more where that came from. I think this would make a great discussion book for middle school students since there's lots of moral grey areas to explore. Kids also enjoy the action, suspense and humor. I do recommend if you listen to the audiobook that you find a print copy to refer to occasionally because the illustrations only add to the fun, however you don't absolutely need them to understand the story.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5What a fun book!! I also highly recommend listening to this one on audio Bahni Turpin’s narration is Fantastic!! I wasn’t sure what I would think of a book about an alien invasion since I am more of a fantasy girl than a sci-fi one. However this is such a fun story I recommend it to teens and adults alike! Our heroine Gratuity “Tip” Tucci is 11 going on 40 she is assigned a paper for a time capsule on “The True Meaning of Smekday” but Tip’s story is not the usual fare and she doesn’t know where to start, should it be when her mother starts receiving alien messages from the mole in her back? Or when she meets and befriends one of the Boov named J-Lo? Or about her journey to Happy Mouse Land where the aliens are sending all the humans? This is such a great adventure and hilarious to boot. I love Tip and J-Lo well actually every character in this book is so fun! I don’t know what else to say, I just feel like I can’t do it justice other than to say go get this book and enjoy it! You will not be disappointed!5 Stars
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5I listened to this on CD while driving with my 10-month-old son to Grand Marais. It's a fun, original story about alien invasion. There's lots of twists and bumps, like a mild roller-coaster ride. Great fun summertime kid book.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/511 year old "Tip" must journey across the country in search of her mother who disappeared when ab alien race, the Boov, invades Earth. She gets befriended by a Boov who helps her in her journey. This book was hard to classify genre wise.
- Bewertung: 2 von 5 Sternen2/5Fantasy, science fiction.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5I thought this book would be funny and interesting but I didn't think it would be so touching. I'm also impressed that Adam Rex did the cover art and the internal illustrations.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Hilarious! In this story of what happens when aliens fight over who's going to dominate over Planet Earth, one tween girl and one outcast alien somehow manage to save the world! Definitely worth checking out! Appropriate for middle school and beyond...
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Wonderful elementary and middle-school level book. Highly recommended. The protagonist is an eighth grader who has lost her mother to an alien invasion. The book takes the form of an essay being written by the girl to explain what Smekday really means to her... The winner will have their essay included in a time capsule to be opened 100 years in the future. So Gratuity ("Tip") Tucci begins her story. She's funny, witty, and mature, while still having the light-heartedness and hopefulness of a, well, a middle-schooler.She first goes into the "what happened"... then the "what next" when her teacher urges her to include more personal reflection. Tip, her alien (Boov) compadre "J-Lo," and her cat all set out to first save themselves and then to save the world. It's light, fun, quick, and cute. It's original, thoughtful, and funny. Well-populated by a wide variety of characters with their own personalities, this book is a gem that I'm glad I've discovered!Definitely recommend for elementary (high level) and middle school readers looking for something new...FOUR of five stars.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Another one I picked up because it was on the reading list of my friend who's studying to be a librarian. I really enjoyed this one as well. It's written from the point of view of Gratuity "Tip" Tucci, an eleven year old girl, as she joins with an alien named J-Lo, a car named Slushious, and a cat named Pig to save the world. I love Tip's voice - she is smart, tough, & feisty. I also love her friendship with J.Lo. J.Lo (who is a boy) has a limited understanding of english, and Tip has a limited understanding of J.Lo's misunderstanding of english, which often leads to funny miscommunications. The story has a great sense of humor, witty & sarcastic. It reminded me a lot of Douglas Adams' The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy series, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. If you are a fan of witty sci-fi, or if you are a fan of witty sci-fi who is hoping to get your kids interested in same, I highly recommend it!
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5This novel hits on all cylinders: female African-American protag who is smart and tough, hysterically funny alien, solid coding as a way to talk about Indian relocation (including a Native American character who talks about these issues). Solid children's science fiction. HIGHLY recommended.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5I couldn't really buy the conceit of this being a school essay, but if I forgot about that and just enjoyed the story, I really liked it!
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5If you enjoy Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, this is a book for you.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5I thought this book was really funny and charming. I'm embarrassed to say it turned me into that nerdy person who snickers out loud while reading.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5I thought this might be one of those books that is capital-G goofy in a desperate, “kids like this stuff, right?” kind of way. How could I ever believe that of Adam Rex? Is it goofy? Absolutely. Pitch-perfectly goofy, and all in the service of a good story. Gratuity is a delight, especially in her relationships with her mother and J Lo. As far as I’m concerned, this is the gold standard of goofy alien-invasion stories.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5A really fun read for ages 9 or so up. I'm 41 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Really funny dialog, clever use of graphic illustrations. An 11 and a half year old girl named Gratuity ("Tip") Tucci, an alien named J.Lo, and a cat named Pig save the world.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5If you haven't figured it out by now, my other passion besides books are movies. I watched Home which came out last year and starred (the voices of) Jim Parsons, Rihanna, and J. Lo. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was based on a middle grade (I struggled over this designation) novel entitled The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. (Do you see where this post is headed?) Both storylines focus on a little girl named Gratuity "Tip" Tucci as she tries to find her mom in the aftermath of an alien takeover. The aliens are called the Boov and they've corralled the humans into a centralized location and taken over everything. This is where the similarities mostly end. The relationship between Tip and her mom, Lucy, is less than ideal. Her mother drinks a lot, is financially irresponsible, and relies heavily on her daughter who is only eleven. I appreciated that Rex wrote this in a matter-of-fact way. It's a reality that exists for many children and I think realistic relationships such as these are underrepresented. What's important is that despite all of that Tip is determined to find her mother so that they can be reunited. Of course, it's not as easy as that. She's in Philadelphia and the majority of humanity have been sent to Florida. She buys a car with the emergency savings they have in their apartment and sets out with her pet cat, Pig. (That wasn't a typo.) She meets a Boov named J. Lo (Firstly, it's a boy Boov which is awesome. Secondly, the book is actually dedicated to J. Lo and as mentioned above she voices a character (the mom to be exact) in the movie.) who enhances her car so that it hovers. They go on a rollicking, dangerous adventure to find her mom while dodging the Boov and another race of aliens called Gorg (actual race is Nimrogs but they are all named Gorg) who have also arrived to colonize Earth. Rex uses illustration in a clever way throughout the book. There are "polaroids" (pencil drawings) of different parts of their trip as well as comic strip illustrations from J. Lo with written explanations by Tip. It's a quick, fun read that I think would especially benefit reluctant readers. It had a lot of heart and touched on a lot of topics such as substance abuse, race, and loyalty. I really enjoyed it. :-D
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Twelve-year-old Gratuity Tucci saves the world from alien invasion in this hilarious science fiction novel by the author of Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich. The Boov have invaded the Earth and want all the humans to relocate to Florida, until they change their minds about Florida and send them to Arizona instead. Gratuity and a rogue friendly Boov named J. Lo take a cross-country road trip and save the world from invasion.
