David Moody

From the UK, DAVID MOODY first self-published Hater on the internet in 2006, and without an agent, succeeded in selling the film rights for the novel to Mark Johnson (producer, The Chronicles of Narnia film series) and Guillermo Del Toro (director, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth). If you're not a big reader of zombie fiction or have not seen most zombie movies you might enjoy this. However, if you're at all familiar with the standard tropes and story arcs of zombie tales, this book does nothing but tread familiar ground. This is an uninspired run of the mill zombie tale.

Didn't like. Written like an amateur. I'm sure there are good zombie books out there; this isn't one of them.

I read to page 50, trying to give AUTUMN a fair shot, but I just couldn't read anymore of it. A virus kills everyone in a mid-sized city (possibly the world) except 26 people. These 26 people mope around until they hear music and then convene with other survivors. No one bothers to go out and gather supplies. They don't say much to each other, and when they do, their words are meaningless. And then the corpses start to reanimate. By page 50, I still wasn't the slightest bit invested in any of the extremely flat characters. Do the rest of the survivors get eaten by the "zombies"? I don't care either way. Not for me.

Autumn explores a world in which the majority of the population fell dead, from what appeared to be suffocation. The few survivors in the small village in which the story takes place, take shelter in an old community center. When the dead begin to rise and walk around tensions and tempers flare. Three of the survivors decide to set out on their own believing they need to flee to the countryside to survive. They soon discover hiding is next to impossible. This was an enjoyable tale of survival. The POV alternates between three main characters. Emma, Michael, and Carl. Carl has lost his wife and young daughter, and is dealing with a nasty case of survivor's guilt. Emma and Michael are both single, but grieving for the family they aren't sure if they'll ever see again. I did like the characters, but with the alternating POV I didn’t feel I had the chance to connect with them like I'd hoped. I really liked the way the undead in Autumn progressed. Almost as if while time passed they slowly regained some of their senses. It definitely felt like they were headed towards becoming seriously badass. This is an enjoyable and quick read. I'll definitely continue with the series because I'm a total zombie fangirl, and I enjoyed the author’s take on the undead.

Autumn is a bleak zombie tale centered around three survivors in England. Humanities final day is like any other until with horrifying speed nearly the entire human population succumbs to some virus. It quickly becomes apparent though that a full third of the dead are not so dead after all. Day after day their reanimated corpses become more purposeful as the surviving zombies direct their remaining flesh and energies against anything that still seems to be human and living.Against these impossible odds a handful of survivors struggle to cope with their unimaginable loss as the dead come alive, determined to tear them apart. Michael, Emma and Carl emerge as the three main characters left alive in the blasted out existence.

    Seven out of ten.

An entertaining read with a zombie novelty thrown in. Not the best writing or action packed storyline but suspenseful...

This book scared the crap out of me. It starts out with a normal guy on a normal day then everything falls apart. This story has almost two parts to it. In the beginning it is just awful as most of the population dies suddenly and painfully from an airborne virus. Just that idea of watching everyone around you die and the terror of wondering if you are next and then when it doesnt happen, the terror of being ALONE. So eventually some survivors get together and try to figure things out and...whoa...the dead are getting up. I read the other reviews on this site and I am truly baffled. I am a voracious reader and can only surmise that this book is unlikeable to some because it is that dark and scary that some people cannot handle it. I personally highly recommend it...just sleep with the light on!!!

I really wanted to get behind this book. I’ve read other zombie novels and I’ve loved them.I just couldn’t.This was a really quick read. The main characters were bothersome. The one with the most depth became dull as the author reminded us again and again of the character’s driving force.A lot of the prose was beating the dead dog. Anytime someone came up with a proactive idea, there were pages upon pages of argument. The point when I felt the characters should have argued, they didn’t, causing plenty of problems and ultimately forcing them from their safe haven. The initial few chapters, in which everyone died, had me on edge. They were that awesome. The shell shocked survivors that came after that, well, let’s just say that their elevators no longer went to the top floor. The zombies, oh the zombies. There wasn’t even really a zombie until a good quarter of the way through the book. Even after the dead started shambling, they only shambled aimlessly, not reaching their full zombie potential until well into the novel. Scenes involving them varied from nail biting to dull.I’m torn as to if I’m going to attempt to continue the series. I’m hoping that the author learned from his faults and improved, because what was exciting was very much so. It was just padded with a whole lot of unnecessary fluff.(

It’s been awhile since I’ve enjoyed a zombie book so I was quite happy to curl up with Autumn by David Moody and get lost in a world of disease and walking dead. This book definitely had the right amount of creepy for me. At first 99 percent of the population drops dead within 24 hours and while a small amount of survivors huddle together in shock and grief, they come to the realization that things are definitely going to get worse as after a few days the corpses become reanimated. At first slow and witless, as time goes by, they appear to regain many of their basic instincts along with a hatred of the living. The bright side for the living is that the creatures are continuing to decompose and eventually they should disintegrate.I enjoyed this dark story but I was a little disappointed with the ending as everything was left up in the air but I will be continuing on with the series in order to see how the author resolves this bleak dystopian tale.

Truly just an OK book. The character's are not well developed and well, kind of dumb. At first the rising dead aren't dangerous, but everyone is freaking out about going outside. Umm...go get supplies! Some of the characters are just plain jerks. The two main male characters fight without reason like 10 and 13 year old brothers and it doesn't add to the story at all. Just thrown in for conflict I guess. It ended up just being irritating. The seems almost like a young adult book, but there are no young characters so it's not in that category.

I enjoy survival horror, and this is up there with the best of them. Occasionally I found the characters a bit annoying, but it's probably not a bad thing. They were doing things that I wouldn't have and the fact that it annoyed me means I cared about them enough to be annoyed.

ZOMBIES. Yes. So, weirdly, I had no idea that there was actually a zombie-book market. Did some scouring and most of them appear to be pretty bad. But I decided to pick these up (I got the trilogy, haven't read the third yet) based on reader reviews. They're not bad. A bit repetitive, as we go round the should we leave our safe house/this place will not be safe for long debate several times throughout each book. Character voices are rarely distinctive -- the university professor uses the same language, word choice and cadence as the 14 year old student, every single character says "Don't know" instead of some variation (I don't know, Dunno, etc.) The author seems to be getting better at that midway through the second book, as the character of Donna is a little more feisty than the others. Interesting and has kept me reading.

My suggestion is to get, read it. I loved it and if you love zombies, like me, you're sure to love this book. Mr. Moody has a number of books in this story. It's fast paced and believe me, you won't want to put it down. You'll be afraid you'll miss something. Lots of action!

This is a easy read but still have some intense moments. I've really enjoyed the story so far. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. There is a certain level of grossness, but not too bad. btw, to all my friends, if 99% of the population drop dead and I'm still alive, I'm beheading any of you who are down. I want you to stay down!!!

“Surviving is one thing," he said quietly, his voice suddenly calmer, "but you've got to have a reason to do it. There's no point in living if you don't have anything worth living for.”Well, for some reason I felt like another zombie novel and this was actually a good read. The story is set in the UK and starts off quite dramatically with people just starting to drop dead and whoops around 95% of humanity is wiped out within a very short time. Initially there are 27 survivors who meet in a church community center where they feel safe to start off with. Whilst still trying to get accustomed to the change of the world they have known before, the dead begin to get up. Everyone is horrified and tries to figure out what is happening. In the beginning, the dead just get up, they are disoriented and harmless when they stumble around the streets. However, I found that part especially creepy and was waiting the whole time for something terrible to happen. But nothing happens for some time. The people in the group start very quickly to disagree with each other and as a consequence three survivors Michael, Emma and Carl break up from the group to find a safer place. Now we follow these three and their struggle for survival in this new and hostile world. I thought the build up from the very harmless and unaware dead to the truly dangerous pack of zombies was quite well done, because it gave the survivors a false sense of safety. What I also found quite fascinating was that David Moody did not use one single time the term "zombie" thoughout the whole story. All in all this was an enjoyable read. However, the only critique I have to make is that I was a little bit dissapointed in the character development and some of the conversations and arguments Michael, Emma and Carl had were just tidious. Nevertheless, as I am intrigued now, I will definately look out for the other books of this series in the future.

Erm, not my favorite unfortunately. While I was drawn into the book fairly well by the opening the initial engagement with the book had faded before I was halfway through. I struggled to finish this, it's not simply the fact that we were taking a more character driven look at the zombie apocalypse because there's been cases of that being far more compelling than just OMG THE HORROR ZOMBIES AHH, works like Feed, The Wlking Dead and even Stephen King's Cell come to mind. Simply I feel the book had some pacing issues which is unfortunate. I'd certainly read more by the author to see if this is just a shambler.

In less than a day, 99% of the population died because of an unknown virus. The few survivors are shocked and gather together for safety in a community. Then some of the many corpses start to walk around. Most of the survivors start to panic and turn on each other, so Michael, Carl, and Emma decide to go off by themselves and find a safer place to stay. They find a secluded farm house in a rural area and opt to settle there for the time being. Then the walking corpses seem to be more aware and gather around people or things that make noise. The survivors don't know what to make of this new development, so they try to avoid the dead and make a new life for themselves. Then, they start to attack the survivors. Michael, Carl, and Emma realize the danger they are in. The walking dead keep coming in huge numbers and are attracted to the light from the house and every sound they make. Can they figure out a way to survive in this world full of corpses dead set on destroying them?Autumn is a good, solid zombie book. The writing style and plot really drew me in from the very first pages. Others have complained that the pacing is too slow, but I disagree. The focus of the book isn't on the zombies, but the emotions and conflict between the human characters. It takes time to illustrate detailed characters, their different lives, and their connections with each other. This situation seemed much more plausible and realistic to me. The survivors are upset because practically everyone they know is dead and of course their minds aren't instantly going to go to zombie apocalypse. They are confused and don't really know what to do or why everything is happening. Emotions are running high, causing them to make unwise decisions and lash out at each other out of fear or anger. This is how people act in extreme situations. Michael, Carl, and Emma all have their own unique things to deal with and aren't perfect characters. They doubt themselves and agonize over what would be best to do. No one is confident in their course of action in this post-apocalyptic world. The survivors' actions made sense to me and illustrated what real people would do in a horrible situation. This isn't your typical zombie book. There aren't gobs of blood and gore drenching every page, but there is definitely potential for more in the next book. I really enjoyed the quiet, slow burn of the book. It is reminiscent of John Ajvide Lindqvist's Handling the Undead. I would recommend this to zombie fans that don't mind a more casual pace and a more cerebral approach to the zombie genre. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

This is a very interesting look on the stages of the whole zombie thing! I will admit it does go a bit slow, but you are getting a whole lot of foundation for what I hope to be a very good series of stories. I understand this book is a re-release as will be the next few in the series and I am looking forward to reading the next. This first book -"Autumn"- is not very graphic or action packed, but it sets the stage for some very exciting situations. While I expect a lot of violence and gore in my zombie books, this series is taking a slightly different approach to the viewpoint. You see the beginning stages and the process of the world falling into shambles as a sudden disease drops the human race almost into extinction - but slowly brings them back as a different race entirely. I look forward to seeing what happens to the remaining humans as this series continues.

Autumn by David Moody is a zombie apocalypse novel told from the perspective of ordinary people. It begins by describing the sudden death of 99% of the world due to a virus. Anyone who has read a zombie story has seen it before -- but what was different about this story was the realism. The circumstances are described by a series of survivors, all of whom are completely ordinary people caught up in extraordinary situations. They see most of the world fall dead around them and respond in different ways -- by crawling back into bed, hiding, seeking out others, etc. The survivors end up congregating at a community center and eventually understand the horrible truth, which is that the dead are coming back to life. Several of the survivors (Michael, Emma & Carl) run away together to find refuge in the country, and work to build a life for themselves. It's an uphill battle, and I found myself cheering for them. I found many scenes in the book chilling, more so perhaps because the characters are completely ordinary. This isn't a fast moving "28 Days Later" sort of story with lots of thrills, but it is atmospheric, with some scenes that were truly creepy.

It all happened in an instant. First, a pain in the mouth. Then the throat would swell and and bleed, and death followed within seconds. And it spread from person to person almost too quickly to be believed, leaving a handful of survivors surrounded by hundreds, perhaps thousands or millions, of the dead. For the few survivors holding up inside the flimsy walls of the Whitchurch Community Center, the worst is far from over. After a few days, some of the dead begin to rise, ambling about, bumping into walls and other objects like flies against a window. Carl, Michael and Emma decide that the group would be better off away from the Center, away from such a large amount of dead and the recently re-awakened. Unable to convince others to join them, they set off in search of a more secure location, but slowly realize that no place may be safe as the re-awakened begin to show a violent awareness of those still living. In the blink of an eye, "Autumn" turns the world as we know it inside out, creating a very dark and bleak story of survival, with a subtle twist to the zombie tale. Rather than passing the infection with slow-moving bites, allowing characters to prepare and to fight, this one spreads like wildfire doused with gallons of jet fuel. Everyone is caught unaware and unprepared. The too-quick devastation takes a mental toll on the characters which adds a new psychological twist to the survival story.I like that each of the main characters is forced to deal with the sudden loss: Carl refuses to let go of the memories of his wife and young daughter; Michael realizes that he'll never again see his friends and co-workers; and Emma, tries not to deal with events by locking herself in her room and pulling the covers over her head, hoping it will all go away. They show human frailties and struggle to find the strength to continue, which for me made them more believable and realistic. What also adds to "Autumn"'s creep factor are the re-awakened. At first, they act like newborns, blind and not completely aware of their surroundings, but as the story moves along, they begin to learn, to be attracted to sound and to motion. It's that seeming ability to learn that makes these particular re-awakened more dangerous than other versions of the undead."Autumn" is the perfect book to get your adrenaline pumping, forcing you to stay up late and read page after page because you need to see what happens. Highly recommended!!

This was somewhat of a page-turner, but the writing was (to my mind) rather flat, and I do not see that Moody added any interesting new spins to the usual Zombie Menace tropes. Apart from the ever-increasing menace from the zombies, the plot did not seem to have anything to say, and the characters had inklings of individuality but were ultimately flat.Also- and understand that I come from more of a science fiction perspective here- I do not think a virus can kill within seconds of infection; it takes time for the virus to colonize the cells and reproduce more of itself. Likewise, if the zombies were rotting, the process of rotting itself would prevent their mobility after a while; if there is no connective tissue holding the bones together, the bones can't move. As a horror convention, ignoring this might work... but I'd really love to read a zombie novel that was at least somewhat plausible with the science! However, I did find it a page-turner, and ended up reading it in a day! It helps that I got it in October, which is my month for reading horror!

I love a good zombie story. Autumn was not.Autumn follows the formulaic zombie apocalypse: Most of humanity suddenly gets sick. They die. They come back to life. The few survivors band together but fight so much that they eventually destroy themselves. Throw in some bad romance. Add a few taboo plot devices, such as the false tragedy that turns out to be just a dream sequence, sprinkle liberally with grammatical errors and spell check mistakes, and call it a novel. I expected a book that has already been published online and downloaded by half a million readers to have been better edited before it made it into print form.

I love zombie apocalyptic books. While you want the book to be full of zombies, gore, horror and just genuinely scary, you also want characters to relate to and a good enjoyable story. Moody didn't deliver with the characters. I read this book in one evening. Not because I was way into it but because the characters fell flat and I was unmoved by them. I just wanted the story over.

Have been a fan of Moody's since first reading Hater, and was very excited to see the first part of the Autumn series being finally released here in the States. And Moody did not disappoint. This is a zombie novel, without ever even saying the word. Yet Moody does a superb job with the staging of his story. The undead don't change in nano seconds like in most stories/movies. Moody handles the change in degrees, first death, then rebirth, then slowly regaining senes to build into the inevitable. The way Moody presents all this very slowly over the span of weeks ratchets up the suspense. He lulls the survivors (and the reader) into a false sense of semi security, making the final chapters that much more intense. I really hope that this leads to the rest of the series being published as well, because this is just great writing.
