Okay, up to this point the characters, their ethical confusions, their fights and their priorities were driving an interesting story. This issue, however, degenerated into a catalog of suspense/action/HBO series tropes: raping the tough chick, abrupt limb loss, evil leaders with henchmen who like power tripping, gladiatorial combat, etc., etc. I'll read the next issue in hope that the author was setting up an interesting ethical situation or at least some discussion (heretofore absent) of the science of zombiehood, but this ish was just ick for ick's sake.

The graphics, stories & gore…who could ask for anything more (zombies that is). I sank into the series with zest, couldn’t wait for the TV series to go DVD…don’t watch TV. Now season three is making me so thirsty! Makes me want to pay a premium to get it on demand…SMILE*

I blew through the first five volumes too quick, and the series took a great turn with this one. Very dark twist of events. The last couple volumes were a little soapy, so I'm glad to see some action here and get a new antagonist introduced. Good stuff.

great series, this paticular volume deals with some very dark elements. Considering this is a series about zombies and death, and the destruction of the world its impressive a book like that can still shock and awe.

Volume 5, The Best Defense is only slightly better IMO than the previous volume. Emotions are still running high, people are still stupid, and Michonne is still incredibly badass.

"I'm - I'm not crying for me. I'm crying for you. I think about all the things I'm going to do to you and it makes me cry. It scares me."

The gang starts to get comfortable and relaxed in their prison home. One day they see a helicopter crash and follow it to discover a nearby town, sheltered from the zombies and run by an evil man known only as The Governor. Also Carol weirdly keeps hitting on both Rick and Lori. The graphic novel Governor is less scary than the TV one, I think. Mostly because the TV one takes longer to reveal his secrets, I think. Either way, this was a really good one.

    And the Governor is here!

Wow this volume's subject matter is loads darker than the previous ones, the reader gets to see how dark some people can get during the zombie apocalypse. I was mega shocked by the rape and torture of Michonne and just how sick in the head the Governor is.. Stuff of nightmares. However shocking it is, it's more believable than some the lame soap opera that was going on in the last volume.

Carol is an absolute freak show. Glad to see Sophia is allowed to live in the comics. Carl is a lot more likeable as well.

Most comic series sag at some point, and the author introduces some fresh situation to keep it lively. Here the fine folks who are living behind bars to stay safe from the zombies see a helicopter fly overhead, and three of them go to investigate it. What follows is as horrific as the Zombies who lurk outside the safe gates of the prison. Any possibly more dangerous. If there were an apocalypse, what would happen to basic human behavior. The answer in this part of the series is not hopeful.

Perhaps the most graphic and disturbing volume of the series so far. We're asked to draw parallels between the savage instinct for survival possessed by both the zombies and our heroes.I still find myself tiresomely irritated by the quality of the illustration.

I upgraded from 2 stars... I'm not real thrilled with a few scenes from the graphic novel, but they did introduce new plots, people, etc, and I always appreciate forward movement.

Our intrepid little heroes see something, go out to investigate and find a settlement not too far away. And we're introduced to the Governor and his rather fucked up society (of course, it's not quite that black and white, but him being fucked up is rather solidly colored, so he's not much more than a two dimensional evil character - he even has a goatee to prove it!).

I want to dock a score because of the rapeyness. It's not even just a little rape, but full on torture rape. I suppose it could have been worse, but since it's all family friendly torture porn in this book, I suppose they couldn't show more than they did. I dislike rapeyness, sure the society is brutal and ugly and all that, and I would fully (and sadly) expect rape to happen, I'm just not a fan of it in books for just shock's sake.

The group spreads through the prison to make new homes for themselves and locate the armory; a crashing helicopter is spotted; and Rick, Glenn, and Michonne make the acquaintance of the less than sane leader of the Woodbury group, the Governor. Other than Carol's odd suggestion to Lori, this is mainly an action installment of the series - trying out the riot gear, chasing the helicopter, and the events at Woodbury all bring the group into reaction mode; the whole pacing of this installment raises the adrenaline level and gives introspection a bit of a break and it's a shot in the arm that the series benefits from.
