Another great chapter in the Y: The Last Man series of graphic novels. Yorick (the only man left on Earth) and the rest of their motley crew continue their trek across the U.S., pursued by several groups that want Yorick for their own ends. They are sidetracked when they learn that the astronauts from a space station that was in orbit during the plague are about to make landfall in Kansas -- and there just might be two living men among them.

** spoiler alert ** While not as edge-of-the-seat as volume 2, I still had a difficult time putting this one down. Yorick's gang adds another member, and the Israeli's catch up to them. Some unexpected things with how the encounter turned out.The secondary story in the last two issues came out of nowhere and I'm really curious if there will be any explanation regarding to how Ampersand ended up in the forest and what's up with the ninja. Then again... there's now a ninja. That's because this series is awesome. On a side note, the cover image makes me want to walk around, repeating, "Hey, who turned out the lights?"

There's no doubt that Y: The Last Man gets better with each volume, and the weaknesses of the art itself start becoming less pronounced, while Brian Vaughn's story gets more and more interesting. There is a still a plethora of goofy dialogue (seemingly lifted from a really awful TV sitcom), and the core plot driver (the almost complete extinction of male mammals) remains undefined and weak as a story device - but it all works anyway. Vaughn has enough interesting ideas about how an emerging all-female society would function to allow the reader to suspend disbelief and keep on reading. So, onto volume four!

I really do want to read the rest of the series. I laugh out loud on about every other page. BUT some of the crazies are starting to seem a little too crazy. It's like he thought, "What is the most extreme people would become in this situation?" And then used those ideas in the book.

The second volume of Y -- Cycles -- left me a little disappointed. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't as good as I'm used to Brain K. Vaughan being. One Small Step brought me back into the series with enthusiasm. Here is what Vaughan does best -- bring various people with various motives together into a train wreck (or a shuttle wreck) and then pick up the pieces. It is wonderful that even amongst the different interests there are still differing motives. Not all of the Israeli women are the same. Not all of the actresses in the second story-arc are the same. Yorick even has frequent disagreements with his own friends. Yes, the people have divided into sects, but they remain people.I guess that is what I disliked about Cycles. The former prisoners were largely the same, and the Amazons were largely the same. In this one, however, we have about twelve real characters. They are not prisoners to their jobs, in other words.

I have been reading this series slightly out of order, so it was good to finally get to this one. Two male and one female astronauts were in space when the plague hit and now their spacecraft will crashland in a Nebraska field. A Russian agent called Natalya persuades 355 to help. Yorick is also keen to share the burden of last manhood. But those pesky Israeli soldiers must interfere and things do not go smoothly (do they ever?)

The series continues with Dr. Mann, Yorick, Ampersand and Agent 355 trying to get to California to the doctor’s second laboratory. Along the way, they hope to find more men when they come across a space shuttle landing. They also drop in for a showing of a play about the last man on earth, which is a cute little postmodern device. Also one of the panels that opens a chapter is an "Alas poor Yorick" joke, which I quite approve of, even if it was a long time coming and will undoubtedly happen again. Shakespeare references are quite common; for example, the woman portraying the last man on earth complains about the name Lionel, wishing instead for a name from Shakespeare, perhaps from Hamlet.

Intrigued by the premise; finding the execution to be a little off-putting. It's a dude's idea of what it would be like to be the last man on earth--so even this female-centric world still ends up not really dealing much with women's issues. I don't really have a clearer idea of how to say it, and I'll keep reading a bit more, but I'm not totally sold yet.

My favorite in the series so far, if only because the cut back on the gratuitus sex and language. It's still there or course, just quite as bad. The plot continues to evolve and there were a couple of good twists in this particular episode. The artwork continue to improve. I want a poster of the picture of Yorick and the parachutes. The plot did have a couple of doubtful moments, but the characters are still fun and throughly done. I've heard that the later editions of this series just become pornographic (which might be why my library carries no higher numbers than 4)- a shame. The plot has real potential for growth and the artist certainly has skill. It would be a shame to waste it.

Vol. 3 was better than the first two. The story is starting to coalesce well. I also liked some of the self-referential/self-deprecating humor that acknowledged two of the things I had complained about in the review for vol. 2 - the use of the word "fuck" and crappy literary allusions (specifically they referenced the use of Shakespearean names in mediocre writings).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading the next volumes, once Dave buys them. ;)

Yorick may not be the last man for much longer. Out in space is a spaceship with three astronauts, one a woman and two men. They need to land back on earth and the question is will whatever wiped out all the men work on them or has it moved on/deactivated. No one knows or understands what killed all the males (apart from Yorick and his monkey of course) so they are going to have to risk a landing and hope for the best. Yorick hates being the last man and is very hopeful that the two men will survive the landing and be able to take on the mantle of repopulating the world’s men. A Russian lady joins the team who made a couple of brief appearances in the second book and I really liked her. The Israeli squad also catches up with them and some more storylines are closed and new paths open up. This series keeps you guessing with lots of twists and turns, I will definitely be reading more in the future. I love the ideas behind it and the character development so far has been really good.

A plague has wiped out every man on Earth bar one, but what about the men in space? As two male astronauts attempt to come back to a devastated planet, the question is, if possession of the last man is a national advantage, what good are two more men? A great addition to this intelligently written series.

Three astronauts aboard the International Space Station return to Earth - two of them are male. Could there be hope after all?

Still fun. The last story was, I think, meant to address complaints that the premise is a wee bit androcentric, but it didn't work for me because the "Last Man" stage-play was pretty lame.

However, finding out that Mary Shelley wrote a post-apocalyptic novel called The Last Man? Pretty exciting. (Not actually about the same thing as the graphic novel, but I honestly didn't know that Shelley wrote any novels besides Frankenstein! Turns out she wrote six others.)

So at the end of the last collection, we found out that Yorick may not be humanity's last hope after all; two men exist beyond the earth's atmosphere within the international space station. Nothing like opening your review with a spoiler!

In this installment, Vaughn pushes a subplot that has slowly been building since the beginning involving Israeli militant soldiers. Their eventual plan is to kidnap him and repopulate the homeland becoming the only nation on earth with a male population.

The only thing I didn't care for was the mini-story at the end involving a traveling theatre group. The promoter/writer seemed really cliche with several groan-worthy lines. It added little overall to the story so I was kind of confused in why it was integrated.

While I wasn't as gripped as the first two issues, it still fits well within the story so far. I struggled to give this 4 stars but eventually came to the conclusion that I'm loving this series too much at the moment. Maybe a 3.5 - 4.0 stars makes a little more sense.

This is genius. I will definitely complete the series. With the success of The Walking Dead TV series, I'm sure it is just a matter of time before we see this adapted for TV.

Summary: Yorick Brown is the last man left alive on Earth... but he's not the only man left in orbit. There are three astronauts who have been stuck in the space station since the plague that killed all of the males struck... and two of the three are men. They're coming back down to Earth, and landing in Kansas, and Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann are headed to meet them. However, the Israeli army has also gotten wind that Yorick might not be the only Y chromosome anymore, and they've got plans of their own. There's also a two-issue arc which features Ampersand falling in with a traveling theater troupe.Review: Another solid installment in an increasingly interesting and involving series. There are always a lot of elements in play, and even as some of them converge and get resolved, new ones are added in. There's a good mix of action and story and character development, and a great combination of immediate payoffs and slow-burning plot threads that dole out their hints a little at a time. There are some hilarious bits of dialogue, and some scenes that were absolutely heartwrenching. This volume has two discrete storylines, which are acceptably self-contained, but have plenty of interesting bits to keep me on the hook for future installments. 4.5 out of 5 stars.Recommendation: This series is fantastic... why aren't you reading it already?

I've been flouncing around the house all pouty and restless, unable to come up with a book I could concentrate on for more than five seconds. Because this is the book that I wanted to read, and I thought it wasn't coming out until next month. But we stopped in at the comics store on our way home from some errands this afternoon just to look around, and I barely kept myself from squealing when I saw this book on the shelves. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this series is that good. It's good sci-fi and a good comic. It makes you ponder and it makes you giggle fiendishly. Or at least it makes me giggle fiendishly. If I were limited to reading only one comic this year, this would be it. (but only if I get to catch up on all the back-issues of Strangers in Paradise next year, as cheesy as that is.)
