That's it--I'm finished. Perhaps it is the medium. Each installment provides a new turn, a titular key which leads to further dimensions of the world. That should be fascinating, but it isn't. I will have to tell my coworker, no mas.

Alas, this definitely wasn't my favorite volume in this series so far. Let me tell you, things have gone to a very dark place at Keyhouse. While the first volume had me a little on edge because of all the violence, this one had me feeling a little icky because of all the darkness.

I guess it's probably only fair to mention that I have this weird tick when it comes to children and danger or violence. It's hard for me to like a character at all, even if I know what their motivations are, if they're mistreating a child. Right now, Bode's mother is not my favorite person. In fact, if I had the capability to reach into this graphic novel I would have slapped her repeatedly across the face already. I kind of had an inkling that dark days were coming for this family. I knew eventually things would stop being whimsical, and start being real. I just wasn't prepared.

That being said, this is all my own bias because the arc is still going strong in this series! There were some great new keys introduced, one of which broke my heart, and we finally see the true nature of our villain. You know what makes the villain in this series so gut-wrenchingly terrible? That I actually feel sorry for him/her sometimes. Joe Hill is an amazing writer, and I both love and hate him for it. As for the illustrations? You know the deal! I'm in love with Gabriel Rodriguez's expert work. It shines through here, even within the darkness, and it's going to keep me reading on.

I need to know what happens to this family.

Mrs. Locke's drinking has gotten much worse, to where she mistakes oldest son Ty for her dead husband. A few of the weird kids at school tempt Kinsey into going into the Drowning Cave to see proof that her father had once been there, and Bode finds the Mending Key, while Zack uses the Shadow Key in an effort to kill the Locke children.

Dodge continues his search for the key to the black door and recovers the crown of shadows, causing the Locke children to fight for their lives against the worst of nightmare monsters. Another great installment in this extremely imaginative series. The stakes are as high as they can be and one cannot help by try to warn the characters on the page of the bad things that are coming at them. The art is a little too perfect, but the story is rock solid.

The construction of this series is pretty damn clever. The discovery of new keys constantly opens up new possibilities and angles to the story line – as well as presenting new and exciting visual concepts. In this the thrid volume no less than three new keys are doscovered. My favorite is probably the Giant Key (making me once again wonder why giant size is so rarely used in fantasy), creating a lovely visual spread spanning several pages. The hefty dose of new elements here creates an action-packed and fast-moving volume, full of adventure. But something is also lost in the process. The unease, silence and creepy numbness of the first volume is all but gone now, and Locke & Key is distinctively less scary for it. What really stands out and lingers for me in this volume is the closer look at Nina’s ongoing collaps, and what it does for the family to slowly lose their on reamining adult. Not quite up to par with previous volumes, this is still an exciting and goodlooking series to follow.

Locke & Key has been nothing but spectacular since it's inception. Hill and Rodriguez, despite crafting a series about keys that literally do the impossible, have created these very relatable characters that are both memorable and seemingly real. You hurt when they hurt, cheer when they overcome and anticipate what happens next when the story ends. These are all feelings that an author wants to pull from their audience and Hill does it so well that it's hard to believe that he's still so young in his career.

As the story continues in Crown of Shadows, we're met with the discovery of more keys and the further deteroration of Nina. Nina's decent is heartbreaking to say the least. I've experienced the effect she's having on her kids through the actions of my own mother when I was a child. It never got to a point of physical violence but the alcohol abuse and hurtful words certainly had an effect on me.

A lot happens here but with Rodriguez's skillful hand, the panels are constructed tightly and the suspense is built adquately. Aside from Sean Phillips, Rodriguez might be my favorite artist at the moment.

On a side note, there's a great foreward written by Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man). To receive praises from a guy who wrote one of the most critically acclaimed series of the last decade is not a bad review at all.

3.5 starsThe third book in the Locke & Key series finds the Locke kids home alone for a couple of days, and of course, an additional key is found and used. Don't want to say too much in the summary, but overall, I enjoyed this. However, I found that, in this volume, I was more interested in family dynamic than the horror part of the book.

The scariest part ofthis series might be the horror over watching the family break down. I wait with baited breath to see what every key does. I can't stop reading it now. Onto volume 4.

As volume three opens we find Zack back at KeyHouse sneaking around and searching for various keys, all in the hope of eventually finding the key to the black door. Mrs. Locke is letting her drinking take over her life and she and the two older children have a few confrontations. There comes a night when darkness almost overtakes Keyhouse but the three Locke children are able to banish the shadows but they realize that whoever their enemy is, he’ll be back.I can’t praise the artwork of Gabriel Rodriguez enough. His art helps define this series and always ensures that the reader is well able to follow where author Joe Hill is leading us.

Continues to be one of the creepiest most amazing series I've ever read. I felt like this book was really Kinsey's. We get to see how the fear removal is helping and hurting her. I can't wait to read the next volume in the series.

This is the 3rd graphic novel in the Locke and Key series. The 4th, Keys to the Kingdom, comes out July of 2011. This was an excellent installment in this series; this story just keeps getting more and more interesting. I think this was my favorite one yet, which is really saying something since I have loved them all. I should also mention that the hardback version of this is just beautiful; even has a lovely ribbon to keep track of your place in the book.As the Locke children's mother is incapacitated by grief and forced to deal with yet another loss, the Locke children are left to fend for themselves in a house where things are becoming increasingly strange. Dodge continues his search for the Black Door Key and summons an army of shadows to torment the Locke children. The Locke children are forced to fight for their lives against the shadows within.This is just such an interesting, if profoundly creepy, series. Every installment introduces new mystery to the storyline and every installment introduces strange new keys that do fantastical things. I am so excited to see what each new key does, and so interested in how this battle between the living and the dead, between Dodge and the Locke children will play out.This is definitely a novel for adults, some of the things in here are disturbing. The mother of the Locke children continues a rapidly increasing descent into misery and spends a lot of time drinking and being generally useless and tragic. The Locke kids struggle along as well as they can. It is interesting to see some of the affects from Head Games and how they played out in this book. I was thrilled by the fact that this installment cranks up the level of fantasy quite a bit. When Dodge uses the Key of Shadows and summons and epic army of shadows things get really awesome.The artwork is incredibly beautiful and the shadow army lets the illustrators show off even more of their considerable talent. The story ended well enough, but I am still desparate to see what will happen next.Overall just an outstanding addition to this series. These books just keep getting better and better; more and more engaging and interesting. I can't help but feel that this is all building up to something incredibly tragic and I am desparate to know what will happen next. This is one of the few graphic novels I will go out and buy new in hardback; they are definitely keepers. The hardbacks are very beautiful with a lot of attention to detail to the quality of the book; making this book something that is a pleasure to hold in your hands and read. I can absolutely not wait to read Keys to the Kingdom!

I don't know how to talk about the plot in this third volume of the Locke & Key and key series without giving something away, especially since it's an ongoing story. Let me just say that it continues to be fantastic and I continue to love and deeply feel for the Locke kids and hope they survive the weird and wildly dangerous world they've been thrust into.

Locke and Key continues it's addictive hold over the reader in the third installment, Crown of Shadows. This novel focuses on the history of the Locke home and of their father's past. In the past two books new magical keys are introduced and this book is no exception. Be prepared, as shadows will literally come to life and evil will stop at nothing until the most sacred of all the keys is located. I cannot wait to get my hands on the fourth story in this series.

Ok number three has to be the best yet, the story is tight, gripping, beautifully written and utterly fascinating. The characters drive this story and emotionally I was hooked. I love the fact they are dealing with some very human issues as well as insane fantastical ones it gives the book its edge and its heart.

But none the Locke kids are unaccustomed to danger, although when Dodge manages to turn very darkness of Keyhouse against them, it's unlike any threat they've faced before.Review: This series is so, so good. It's crazy good. It's creepy and imaginative and legitimately scary in parts and incredibly creative. It's an interesting and complex world, which is great, and definitely something I look for in fantasy, but what makes it so great are the characters. They're rich and multidimensional and believable and heartbreakingly sympathetic and easy to fall in love with, and as a result, this series strikes the perfect balance between worldbuilding, action, and character development.Volume 3 was probably my least favorite so far, because the bulk of the main storyline shifts away from that balance, and focuses primarily on the kids fighting the army of shadows. The art in this section is particularly beautiful (although it's uniformly great throughout), albeit beautiful in a thoroughly creepy and nightmare inducing way. But the story itself didn't feel like much was happening. That's not true of the first part of the volume, which has a lot of good clues about what's going on in the caves, nor is it true of the last issue in this volume, in which Nina Locke finds the Mending Key, to emotionally devastating effect. But I didn't feel like the pieces fit together as well as they could have. 4 out of 5 stars.Recommendation: Fans of darker, more mature comics - like The Unwritten or Sandman - or anyone who likes creepy character-driven fantasy should definitely be reading Locke & Key.

I don't know what to say about this book. I'm completely in love with the Locke & Key series and I keep devouring them as fast as I can get my hands on them. The drawers are sheer perfection and the writing is astounding. I love our three main characters and their story lines. I'm scared for them, but at the same time I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Well, this series has gotten nothing but better as it has gone along. I've been thoroughly impressed with Hill's writing and Rodriguez's art right along. They haven't lost anything in the storytelling and haven't weakened in their storytelling either. One of the things that I was worried about is that at some point they would lose their momentum, but five volumes in and that hasn't happened yet.In Volume 2, Head Games, the kids are still recovering from the events at the end of Welcome to Lovecraft, events that may brought back a lot of memories that they were trying to forget. Kinsey and Tyler find some companionship in their new friend Zack, not realizing Zack's dark secret or intentions. Bode finds a new key, and as they start to uncover the secrets of this new game, Zack starts to become a little too recognizable for his liking.Volume 3, Crown of Shadows, finds more secrets and more revelations in the background about Dodge and more keys. This volume deals a little bit more with the emotional impact prior events have had on each of the members of the Locke family. I really found these issues handled well in this volume, especially watching Kinsey after her change in the previous volume.Volume 4, Keys to the Kingdom, was a series of shorter stories that all tied into the Key house and what is happening with the various characters. While not necessarily on complete story throughout the entire volume, each of these stories still successfully moves the story along.I was concerned about going into Volume 5, Clockworks, as I'd heard that this was mostly a background story, and I wasn't exactly sure how a volume dedicated almost entirely to background was going to help move the story along, but holy crap was I wrong! I think this might be the best volume so far. We learn about the history of the Locke family, the Keys, Key house, the purpose of the villain behind everything (SPOILERS! - which ties directly in the title of the first volume). It just all came together amazingly well.Needless to say, you won't find much about the actual story in this review, because it's almost impossible to talk about the story without giving anything away, as Hill seems to find a way to tie in almost every plot thread one way or another into all of the story. What I can say, is that this is completely worth reading and might be one of the better graphic novels you'll find. If you're not a fan of horror or of violence, this might not be the best series for you, but if you can stomach it, this is a fantastic series. I'll definitely be picking up the final volume when it's released.Happy (creepy) reading!

I've really been breezing through these stories, reading volumes 1-4 over the course of a morning. Crown of Shadows is stories 13-18 of the Locke and Key series; we begin to find out more about the past, and why the course of events are turning that way again. And we see the Locke family begin to warp under the pressure of all the disaster they've experienced to date.

Der Alkohol wird mehr und mehr ihr Freund und der Leser erkennt eine Mischung aus Verzweiflung und Resignation.Die Vielfalt der Schlüssel macht die Geschichte so interessant. Und nicht nur das, sondern auch das Geheimnis was hinter allem steht. Man fühlt mit den Locke-Kindern mit, will sie beschützen und ihnen sagen, wer der eigentliche Bösewicht ist. Joe Hill schafft es einfach, die Erzählung so zu stricken, dass es zu jeder Zeit interessant bleibt und die Zeichnungen unterstützen diesen Wunsch mehr und mehr. Charaktere sind tiefgründig, die Geschichte komplex, Handlungen nachvollziehbar und besonders in diesem Band trat die Großartigkeit der Zeichnungen besonders hervor.Einfach eine großartige Reihe, die das Weiterlesen fast schon zu einer Sucht macht.

I really should learn not to start series like this while they're still in progress. When I have to wait between installments, I tend to lose the momentum of the story and it takes me far too long to really get back into it, in part because I get distracted trying to remember everything that's already happened.Which was a bit of an issue for me here, but that's my problem, not the series'. This, like the earlier two volumes, is both well written and beautifully drawn, with supernatural elements both wonderful and horrible, and characters who are so believable that it's sometimes painful.Unless the remaining volumes turn out to be almost unimaginably disappointing, I recommend this series wholeheartedly. But you might be better off waiting for it to finish first, unless you're far less distractable and impatient than I am.

This is the third in the Locke and Key series of graphic novels by Joe Hill. This piece of the story focuses more on the development of the main characters, filling them out and making them more three dimentional. We see the family dealing with the loss of their father and the strange things happening in Lovecraft, as well as the mother's decent into alcohol abuse. Can't wait for the next volume! :D

Dodge just keeps getting more and more awful. It's awesome. The fact that the Locke kids have to keep fighting more and more, and the fact that they bring their friends in for some of the weirdness... Great stuff.
