How awesome was this audio book of the graphic novel series of Locke & Key? It was SO awesome, I'm almost rendered wordless.

This was a full cast production and it brought these characters to life. This cast were so skilled at their work; these characters seemed real to me and I even shed a few tears at the end, something I rarely do when reading anything.

All I can say is BRAVO! Bravo to the cast! Bravo to Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez for writing and illustrating the graphic novels in the first place, and BRAVO to whomever decided to give this away for free! Thank you so much, I had a blast!

Locke & Key Vol 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill has such captivating illustrations! The details and mood coloration is fantastic! The story weaves a tale of magical keys and doorways, evil, family, tragedy, and a mysterious house.

Read the first one (which is available to borrow through Prime Reading) and was totally hooked. THEN, saw that it's been made into Netflix series which I have watched in its entirety. I will eventually read the graphic novel series, but seeing it come to life on-screen was amazing. I gulped down all episodes in a couple days and will be eagerly awaiting season two. Joe Hill makes a small cameo in the final episode too - which was like an extra Easter Egg. He greatly resembles his dad, so was easy to spot.Highly recommend in both screen and paper formats. If you're Prime, check out the first volume of the series digitally (it's not the easiest way to digest graphic novels, but at least you'll know if it's worth your time/money to invest in more).

Love that Tyler is wearing an A’s hat! My favorite team!Great artwork! Story is good, but very incomplete. Lots and lots of talk about keys, but no information about what they are for. I guess I’ll have to read the next volume if I want to understand this volume. Not my preferred way to read something. I really like books to have actual ending. But the artwork, woo whee!

As a fan of Joe Hill, I decided to give this graphic novel series a try. This book has some very dark themes. When their father is murdered, Ty, Kinsey and Bode, along with their mother, relocate to Lovecraft, MA, to live in "The Keyhouse." The house is old and mysterious and it is not long before things start happening. Hidden within in the house are several keys. Each key opens a door to a magical power. One can change a male to a female and vice versa. One can turn you into a ghost. Etc. There is a spirit living in an old well on the property. This is a very entertaining story.

"Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft" is a collection of the first 6 comics of the "Locke & Key" series from author Joe Hill and illustrator Gabriel Rodriguez. The Locke children -- Tyler, Kinsey and Bode -- and their mother Nina move into the old family home known as Keyhouse after witnessing their father's murder by one of his students. While exploring the family house, young Bode finds a black key with a skull and, after a quick search, a doorknob with a matching skull. He unlocks the door and steps through, only to find himself changed into a ghost. After wandering around Keyhouse and spying on his family, Bode returns to his body and begins exploring the rest of the house. He discovers an old well, and the voice in the well, whome he calls Echo, wants his help to find the Anywhere Key which turns any door into a portal to anywhere.Joe Hill's creepy story of a mysterious house, magical doors, and a mysterious, evil spirit on its own was enough to send chills up and down my spine. But Gabriel Rodriguez's intricate, and sometimes bloody, illustrations enhanced the tale, making me inspect each pane carefully for some clue, some little detail because I didn't want to miss anything. Also, both their efforts allowed me to get to know the characters: I felt the sadness and anger the both Ty and Kinsey felt, the wonder and surprise that Bode experienced exploring the house and stepping through that first door.Thankfully, the story doesn't end with "Welcome to Lovecraft". In fact, I've already read the first two comics of the second series, "Head Games", and am definitely intrigued as to what they keys and the doors of Keyhouse are hiding. For fans of horror, this is a great comic book series to capture your imagination.

Two teenage boys trick their way into the Locke home and murder Mr. Locke, a high school school guidance counselor. Mrs. Locke is able to kill one of the intruders and oldest son Ty beats the other, but he's left alive and sent to a juvenile lock-up.The remaining Lockes move across country to the childhood home of Mr. Locke, a mansion known as Keyhouse in the town of Lovecraft. Mr. Locke's brother still lives in the house, and while the adults and teenagers try to overcome their loss, little Bode explores the house and finds a doorway that causes him to temporarily die each time he stands in it, and he finds a beautiful girl who lives in the bottom of the well and needs his help. Unfortunately, she's also friends with Sam, the boy who killed Mr. Locke. This is the first volume of the series, and now I need more. I haven't read many GNs, mainly because I hadn't found one that grabbed me, but this is pretty great. The story is imaginative and creepy and the artwork is so detailed. Great, now I'm hooked on another series

After their father is murdered, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke and their mother move to the family estate called Keyhouse, where they soon find out that the estate's name is more apt than anticipated and doors that should probably have been kept shut forever are opened to let in, and out, beings that cause havoc for everyone in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. I have to first admit that the art, while pretty, is not quite my favorite, mainly because I prefer hand-colored art and the computer work is a little too perfect for my taste. However, the story is nothing short of spectacular and it takes only a few pages to get completely engrossed in the life and fate of the Lockes. So many times I would sit and say to the characters on the page, "no, don't go in there!" or, "he's right behind you!" and that doesn't happen very often when I read a book. And, yes, I have already acquired the rest of the series so that I can find out as soon as possible what comes next.

Hard to write a review of a horror story at nearly 4 in the morning when you are awfully certain to have nightmares from it.... But that should tell you how good it was.

Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill (writer) and Gabriel Rodriguez (artist) - This 58-page graphic novel is the beginning of the Locke & Key series. Welcome To Lovecraft is a shockingly violent supernatural thriller that keeps the reader glued to its pages. After Mr. Locke is murdered in California, Mrs. Locke moves her three children to Lovecraft Massachusetts to live in a large mansion named Keyhouse. However, their new home does not provide the sanctuary they are seeking. This is a very well-written story by Hill and the fantastic color art work by Rodriguez significantly complements the story.

The introduction to the new series, Locke & Key, Welcome to Lovecraft sets up a nice storyline and some very interesting story concepts for future installments. The basic premise follows the Locke family, who has moved to the west coast trying to start a new life after the family has been attacked and the father, Renny Locke, is killed by some local high school students. The home that they move to in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, is called Keyhouse. Keyhouse is a mansion with numerous doors and keys, and depending on which key you use, these doors open onto different realities or can change a person (in one case, into a ghost or in another, using the key will change your sex if you walk through a door). The house has apparently been in the family for decades, and Renny Locke's brother is the current resident of the house. There is a ghost who lives in the well house who is unable to escape from the well house without the aid of the Anywhere Key, a key able to open any of the doors in Keyhouse to anywhere else the user wants to go. The well house ghost uses numerous means to escape, manipulating both the psychopathic high school student who murdered Renny Locke, and the youngest Locke child, Bode, to try to locate the Anywhere Key. Whether or not this ghost is benevolent is uncertain by the end of the story.Joe Hill's writing is just creepy enough to give the story a real edge while at the same time not making it seem too far-fetched. Gabriel Rodriguez's art really captures the essence of the story.I'm really intrigued by how future volumes will play out, and I guess that's the important part; that the story has kept my attention enough to want to read more.

This is a graphic novel by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son. Personally, I think he writes far better than his father. I have all of his other books too. The story was fantastic and would make an incredible film. The artwork was good too, not great, but very good. It took a bit of getting used to, but by the middle of the book I really came to appreciate Rodriguez' style. What I liked best were the angles he chose for the panels. It gave the book a very cinematic feel. Without going into too much or giving the plot away; here's a basic synopsis: After a tragedy, a family inherits a large old mansion on the east coast, "Key House". It's a magickal building in that hidden within its walls are an assortment of keys. Each key has a different power. When one unlocks a door with said key it activates that power. It's a really creepy story and 100% geared towards adults.

Holy hell, this was impressive. I haven't read a lot of graphic novel horror as of yet, and I wasn't sure how it translated over. How do you build up tension and unease when the reader can see the entire page at once? Well, Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez figured it out. Let me tell you. This graphic novel is intense! If you're not comfortable with blood and violence, you may want to stay far far away from this series.

So much is packed into this first volume. Welcome to Lovecraft introduces readers to the the ill-fated family and their home, Keyhouse. A home filled with all sorts of magical doors, and a centuries old evil lurking within. I loved this first volume. The characters managed to be perfectly vivid, despite the short time I had to get to know them. Bode is absolutely my favorite. The concept of a child, someone who hasn't been jaded by life yet, being a perfect vessel for evil? Well, it terrifies and intrigues me at the same time.

Oh, and the panels. While I'm not usually a fan of caricature art in comics, it fits this story perfectly. Rodriguez expertly creates atmosphere that twines with the dark and evil plot line, making for a deliciously creepy read. Again, if you can't handle violence and blood I'm warning you now to stay away. These panels are tough to look at sometimes. Some of them are disturbing even. I had quite a few instances of uncontrollable shivers.

A great start! Volume 2 awaits.

Kids always think they're coming into a story at the beginning, when usually they're coming in at the end

This was insisted upon by a friend and coworker. These days I have to be diplomatic, well it helps anyway. This is a very Joe Hill story about childhood, trauma and some unsettling portals. Perhaps I was hoping for something in the titular Lovecraft ethos. This was too orthodox for that, but this is--after all-- only the opening installment. The dialogue was good, the clipped and blurred enunciation of teens was appropriate. The likewise misunderstandings of children are a cautionary tale in themselves. Lots of splatter fill the pages leaving the darkness inchoate. We shall see.

I really dug this. I noted in my review of Horns that Joe Hill has a gift for damaged characters, and that talent is on display here in the form of the Locke kids. They're great characters; I loved 'em all. Their story is tragic and haunting (pardon the pun), and Hill handles it well. Throw in the incredible artwork by Gabriel Rodriguez, which really brings the story and the characters to life, and you've got a beautiful, moving...horror story? Strange but true.I'll be devouring further editions like candy.

Utterly engrossing, I could not put this down. Master of horror, Joe Hill, proves himself a master storyteller with this darkly captivating graphic novel. After a violent crime leaves their father dead, three siblings and their mother move into their father's childhood home, Keyhouse. Little do they realize that this home of many doors and keys also houses a dark spirit that will stop at nothing to get free. The family goes from one hellish experience to another, will they be able to survive? Beautifully illustrated, and captivatingly told. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Author Joe Hill and Artist Gabriel Rodriguez introduce a wonderfully dark fantasy with Locke & Key, Volume 1: Welcome to Lovecraft. The setting is a strange New England mansion that has many locked doors leading to strange places that can transform those who pass through. The secrets to this mansion are just starting to be revealed, I am sure there are plenty more to come in future issues. After the murder of their father, a family comes to Keyhouse, their family estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, to start fresh and try to recover from the violence. Little do they know that one of their father’s murderers has broken out of jail and is on his way to do the bidding of a supernatural force that is trapped within the mansion. The artwork sets the tone for this hauntingly intense story that has moments of savage brutality but still manages to draw the read in and make them care about the characters. The story is strong, bold, and creative. I was totally hooked by page three.

Far too violent & gruesome for me. I listened to the audiobook Locke & Key while reading/looking at this graphic novel - I found that it was good to have both because neither gives a complete story. Too bad the story it told was so awful...

I really loved this story. I have been wanting to read the series for a long time, but I was waiting for the first volume to be available at the Bangor Public Library. It was worth the wait. I will be picking these up at my local bookstore because I know I will want to read them again and again. Joe Hill has his father's gift of character development, but the story is uniquely his own. I cannot wait to read the next volume.

When their husband/father is murdered by one of his students, the Locke family moves to their uncle's large old house in Lovecraft, Massachusetts to make a new start. The mother is trying to hold it together, the eldest son is racked with guilt, the daughter (who already saved her younger brother once) is trying to disappear into the crowd, while the youngest, Bode, explores the ghostly world of their new home. The house they move to is full of doors and hidden keys, which do all sorts of strange things, as Bode discovers. Each character is emotionally complex, and the art is beautifully dark and eerie, fitting the story perfectly. There's plenty of blood, but there's even more humanity as this family faces down the horrors that await them.

Welcome to Lovecraft is the first graphic novel in Joe Hill's Locke and Key series. In the first episode, a tragic event forces the Locke family to move in with their uncle to his Gothic home where supernatural mystery abounds. The house holds many secrets waiting to be unlocked, but the right key must be found to unleash the power within. The storyline for this graphic novel is superb and the artwork complemented the story immensely. I have never really given the graphic novel a chance, but Joe Hill's work may have opened my eyes to a whole new genre of storytelling. The next book in the series will be on order shortly.

I totally see why everyone has been crushing on this so hard. I love the three children and how twisted the house is. It's hard to watch them struggle with their lives and feelings; but I think most of the kids are moving in the right direction--trying to deal and move on. I definitely plan on continuing to read this series. I was expecting a more serious art style but I think the slightly cartoony keeps the story from going totally off the deep end.
