In this volume, we learn more about Allison's background, and about how Yorick became one of the last male species on the planet. This is one of my favourite volumes in the series. I really liked this one. Some questions are starting to be answered, and the action held my interest, as well. There was one section close to the end that I was a bit confused about, however. I'm hoping what's happening there will be explained in the last volume of the series.

All the loose ends in the Y: The Last Man series finally start to get tied up. There are still a few more twists and turns left, but it's nice to have some of the storylines finally resolved.

One aspect of this series is its constant self referral. Brian Vaughn shows a remarkable memory for what has gone before in this story, even minor characters from long ago.The main story continues on its path, with some mysteries revealed and others yet unsolved.

The penultimate volume in the Y: The Last Man series is great fun, with significant revelations hiding behind the turn of each page. The back story of Allison Mann is prominently featured this time around, and it proves to be much more interesting than what we have learned about Yorick Brown and Agent 355 in earlier volumes. Various characters from earlier in the series make return appearances, and the evolving almost-all-female globe begins take on more interesting and convincing shapes. Overall, volume 9 is a great beginning to the inevitable wind-down coming in the tenth and final volume in a uniquely entertaining series.

So we may have gotten an answer as to why all the men died. Or maybe we didn't...

For the penultimate book in what has been an excellent series, this installment is strangely...meh. It is divided into three episodes. 'Motherland' continues Yorick's adventures with a catastrophic encounter with Dr Mann's relatives. But there is a lot of passivity from our trusty crew; they all get locked up, restrained and tormented while the story happens around them. The exposition of the cause of the plague is a bit lame and I hope there is more to it in book 10. 'The Obituarist', the second episode, is much better. It deals with some minor characters back in Washington D.C. but in a very interesting way. The last episode, 'Tragicomic', continues the thread of the dramatists making their way in a man-free world. Overall, this one was a bit patchy and I do hope for better things in the concluding volume.
