A Romeo & Julietesque adventure set in India, complete with Indian gods, superstition, a sacred stone, talking tigers and more. Antonia uses her year spent in India to craft a tale that rings of Scheherazade and her quest to stay alive by telling tales each night of her captivity. I think she went a little overboard by throwing in 2 very unnecessary, very adult love scenes in a book of children's fantasy, which spoiled it for me.

This is a beautifully written book that goes from one story to another, intertwining them together in a stunning and smoothly flowing way. I especially enjoyed the few chapters where Safia, the princess forced to marry against her will, tells the tale of a young boy who is sent, against his will, to rescue a god's daughter. As the book continues, the characters develop and friends are made. I felt as though I knew them personally, and I was sad when it ended, because I truly enjoyed it.But of course, every good book must come to an end.

I bought this at a Barnes and Nobles that was going out of business years ago. I thought the cover was just beautiful. While it sounds like it's the story of a princess, it's really the story of a thief that goes on a quest to save the princess and I think this the first thing that threw me off. I expected to follow the princess, instead I was following a thief who was suddenly turning his life around and his white tiger. And then there is the woman telling the thief's story who makes it clear that she doesn't believe the story in the end and yet clearly it does all seem to be happening with her participation no less.

That being said, I did think that the story was actually beautifully told. The language was gorgeous and the look of the book also worked very well with the story including some nice patterns on each page. I know the book is good but it wasn't for me as much as I thought it was.

I liked the flair that the Indian culture added to genre. It moved at a good pace, and even though I was busy and it took me longer to read than normal, I was able to pick the book after sitting it down and continue on, which is sometimes hard for me to do. Nice enjoyable read with a sweet yet unexpected ending.

Okay after finishing this book I just have to say "I LOVED THIS BOOK". This book is a winner the the 2009 Batchelder Honor Award as well as the 2009 ALA Notable Book. This is a story within a story that has a fairytale like feel to the inner story. Raka, a new bride, tells the story of Farhad and Nitish. Krishna's daughter has been kidnapped by the demon Ravana but Krishna cannot save his daughter himself, so he finds a hero to rescue her. However, the hero, Farhad, is rather reluctant to undertake the adventure and has to be threatened into going to the rescue of the princess. As the story is told Farhad is join on his adventure by Nitish, a talking white tiger, and both must overcome numerous obstacles. As Farhad's story progresses you are a witness to his transformation into a true hero. Though the stories start out as two different stories by the end of the novel they have intertwined and the line betweeen fantasy and reality has blurred. This is a truly wonderful novel filled with the magic, charm and simplicity of India. The very language and description has the beauty and danger one would expect from India and it brings this novel to life.

I really enjoyed this story, which is a story within a story, actually. It begins with the arranged (forced?) marriage of Safia to Ahmed Mudhi. She fears he will kill her when he learns her secret, and tries to escape this fate. While Mudhi recovers from an illness, she is watched over by the eunich Lalit, and tells him a story of the young thief Farhad. Farhad has been chosen by Krishna to rescue his princess daughter from an unwanted marriage to a demon king. With the help of white tiger (who fears water), they travel across India in their attempt to save the princess, and learn the truth about themselves in the process. A fascinating story, rich in imagery, fun to read, a great way to learn about India and Hinduism, as well as learning the art of storytelling. One of my favorite ARCs I brought back from ALA's annual conference in Anaheim in 2008.
