Landing by Emma Donoghue; (4*)I found Landing to be an hysterically funny novel about two lesbians who meet across the ocean from one another and immediate fall 'in like'. Donoghue writes about the chaos that this long-distance relationship causes in their lives, as no one else possibly could. I loved her characterizations (so many quirky ones to laugh and cry over) and the way she pulls the story along. Well done again, Donoghue.

Emma Donoghue writes beautifully. This is only the second book I've read of hers, and it is vastly different from ROOM. I hope as I discover more of her books, each will continue to have its own entirely unique voice.

Landing is the story of a small town Canadian woman and a flight attendant from Dublin who meet by chance and begin corresponding through letters and emails. They fall in love and struggle with the difficulties of a long distance romance.

I was caught up with the first chapter, and remained engrossed right through to the end. I'm a new Emma Donoghue fan.

A charming romance starting with a 'Meet Cute' aboard a transatlantic Canada-to Ireland flight. Museum curator and flight attendant go from the first rush of delight and discovery to the agonies of a long distance romance. I adored Donaghue's characterization of Jude and Sile. We alternate from one to the other, sharing in visits, telephone calls and emails. Anyo9ne who has live through a LDR will recognize the meaning (and misunderstanding) which can go into a simple email or telephone call, and the anticipation of long awaited reunions. I was rooting for the two women from the start. Emma Donaghue is perhaps most familiar for "Room", which was turned into an Academy Award nominated Best Picture film. I was a huge fan of that book, in particular her ability to bring to life a tilted world through the eyes of a five year old boy. Like that book, "Landing" lives as much in the minds of the protagonists as in any action-paced plotting. I'm a big fan and look forward to more from this author.

For some reason, I was convinced this was a collection of short stories. Much to my surprise, it was the kind of story I was looking to read.

Also really loved how the LGBT relationships were just relationships.

I also have the fantasy of living in a small town, earning enough to get by, not wanting for much.

Like _Room_, this is not a fast-paced story. It is a slow unfolding of the long-distance relationship between two women and how they come to understand what really matters to them. I loved the slow story of the inner lives of these two as each learns more about herself and the other. Those who like a tale of action will not like this book. Those who have been in long-distance relationships may find a resonance. There is little or no sexual content.

I read this to the end. But at some point it did seem to go on and on. About a long distance relationship. One in Ireland (mother originally from India) and one in Canada. Will the two women get together. Nice characterization. But I kept wondering why I cared. (Audible listen.)

The previous reviewer captured my thoughts well. This is a simple love story, although well written by Ms. Donoghue. I, too, expected more. One thing I will add is that it is nice to read a book about homosexuals where their sexual orientation isn't the plot!

Entertaining but unexpectedly lightweight lesbian long-distance romance. Nothing wrong with that, and of course Donoghue makes a very competent job of it, but I was hoping for something a little more challenging.

What do a butch Canadian Museum head and an Irish-Indian definitely not butch flight attendant lady (since according to the book it's no longer stewardess or air hostess or all their other previous names) have in common? This book. The novel tells their love story. It's an interesting mix of letters/emails between the two as well as the scenes when they're physically together. It's basically a novel exploring a LDR, how the two main characters refer to Long Distance Relationships, in the book.I found that I liked both the main characters, a lot, but a lot of the secondary characters, friends of Jude and Sile just seemed mean in unneeded ways. Also, while I thought the character of Jude was written great, I could never quite see what she looked like in my head.Aside from those two slight problems it was a solid four star book. Great dialogue and description and a story that ebbed and flowed very naturally.

I agree with the previous reviewer that this is essentially chick lit but well written.

I've loved Emma Donoghue's vivid Slammerkin and Kissing the Witch, and lately she's attracted wide literary acclaim for Room. When I picked up this book, I wondered why her publishers were trying to make it look like chick lit. Now I know: this one is more or less chick lit. A well written but ultimately kind of inconsequential (lesbian) love story.

Cute long-distance lesbian love story. Doesn't have the literary merits of 'Room' whatsoever, but a enjoyable romancy sort of read.

Interesting treatment of love story. Compelling characters. Good juxtaposition of metropolis vs village life. Current setting but semi-victorian in sentiment. The lesbian aspect of this love story is secondary to every other literary aspect of the story.

An engaging story of two women who meet on a plane from Toronto to London (Jude is from Ireland, Ontario and Sile is from Dublin) and spend the next year in a long-distance relationship via phone and e-mail. The dialogue (spoken and printed word) sparkles, and I was left wondering until the very last page how their romance would end or continue.
