This book is on par with the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series. I love, love, love the drawings. They are enchanting and humorous. I find the use of the different font styles captivating. The artwork of text pushes the art of this title to a higher level. Enjoy!

I loved this book! It was really entertaining and funny in some areas, which actually made me Laugh Out Loud.LOL and the tiny flipbook on the corner was just delightful. =D

The books in the Tom Gates series are always very entertaining. What I like about this sketch style is that the words are illustrated within its font or right within the sentence. These books are very attractive to my ELL students and SPED students. I enjoy them for the humor and quickness of the read.

I received a copy of this book from the LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. Tom is just a kid that want to draw, and NOT participate in sports day. Honestly, who can blame him for that? It was fun to follow Tom and his Shenanigans, as he tries to navigate the confusing and difficult preteen years. This story would appeal to fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dog Man. My only complaint with this book is the instructions for the paper banger. Of course I had to try it. The instructions were clear, but they also say to use a regular 8/12 x 11 piece of paper. The paper banger did not work well at all. I pulled up the author's instructional video on YouTube, and she suggests using a size A3 (11.7 X 16.5) piece of paper. I look forward to trying the paper banger with the larger size paper. Overall I got a real bang out of this book, and I sure many young middle school children will too.

I received a free advanced copy of this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I say this as a compliment, “Tom Gates” reminds me of a British version of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. It’s written/illustrated in a very quirky, unique style where even some of the words in the text are illustrations. This story, which is actually #4 in the series, follows Tom Gates as he navigates life as a student in England with quirky parents, a Goth sister, “weird” teachers, and his best mates (friends). The two main events in this story are having to train and compete in his school’s sports day and trying to get his band Dogzombies to perform in the school talent show. There’s plenty of humor along the way including Tom’s telling of the BBQ where his dad burned all the food and when Tom gets a brush stuck in his hair when trying to give himself a rock star style. The great thing is you don’t have to have read the other books in the series to enjoy this one. Overall, I highly recommend this book to upper elementary students and fans of “Diary of Wimpy Kid,” “Timmy Failure,” and “Dork Diaries.”
