Linwood Barclay is a great storyteller and this book starts slowly, but all the details and build-up make it worthwhile when the story changes and a woman and mother disappears and the search for her begins. To say more, would give away too much. Just sit down and read and enjoy the ride!

David and his wife, Jan, take their 4-year old son to an amusement park, when Jan disappears. There are a lot of things that just don't add up; the clues point to one thing, but David knows that's not what happened, and he needs to find out what did happen. It was very good. Fast-paced and interesting; I also found the "background" story interesting (didn't mention it in my summary, but David is a journalist with a break on a story). There were a couple of things I figured out ahead of time, but I still really enjoyed the book overall.

Pretty good thriller. There were a few spots I thought "really" but I enjoyed the pace and the story.

Awesomely good thriller, the best I've read this year. I really liked how the story was resolved, too.

Never Look Away by Linwood Barclay is a fast paced thriller that involves the disappearance of a wife and mother. The police are concentrating on the husband but there are many things we, the readers know that the police don’t. Clues, motives and red herrings abound but this story driven mystery chugs along like a runaway train, gathering speed until the end of the book where it did seem to get a little bogged down. This was my first Linwood Barclay book and I enjoyed it a lot. His main character is a normal small town guy who has a hard time putting all the pieces together, but when he does, he steps up nicely. In fact, I found most of the characters were well fleshed out. I did think that it was quite obvious who was behind the disappearance, but the most important element of the thriller, to me is the pacing and not having too many moments that cause you to scratch your head. I felt Never Look Away had excellent pacing and very few plot-holes, so it totally worked for me.This was my first book by Linwood Barclay, and I now know that I can turn to this author when I am in the mood for an entertaining and compelling thriller.

Jan Harwood has been experiencing bouts of depression and thoughts of suicide lately, so husband David thinks an outing to a local amusement park with their son Ethan might cheer her up. For a frightening moment it seems that Ethan has been abducted but is found safe and sound in his stroller a few steps away. When David turns around is seems his wife is the one to have disappeared. David becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance and diligently tries to find her, not only to clear his name but to be able to keep his son.

Although a familiar plot, Mr. Barclay does manage a bit a fresh twist to his telling. Good read.

This book was okay. It was a good read. The only thing I didn't like was how the plot of the book kept changing.

This was a book I had to read for a book club meeting. It is not a genre of books that I read very often. It was a good story and it did keep me interested. Parts of it were a bit predictable, but there were some twists and turns I did not see coming.

A warm summer Saturday, an amusement park "Five Mountains", David Harwood is glad to be spending some quality time with his wife "Jan" and their 4 year old son "Ethan." But what begins as a pleasant family outing turns into a nightmare after an inexplicable disappearance. A frantic search only leads to an even more shocking and harrowing turn of events leading to a guilty husband's involvement, that are all misleading evidence.

    I won! Love it.

This was a very quick read. An interesting mystery where I didn't necessarily predict anything to happen. I liked the book, but that's it. I enjoyed the easy read, but Barclay is no Harlan Coben.

Iteresting to me were the many references to Rochester and Pittsford.

David Harwood is a journalist for a small paper in upper New York State and is working hard on a story about corrupt local government officials taking bribes to approve the establishment of a privately run prison in the area. On top of this pressure, for several weeks his wife Jan has been exhibiting signs of depression, to the point even of reporting suicidal thoughts to her husband and he is very concerned. In an attempt to lighten the family’s mood the couple take their four year old son Ethan to a local amusement park for the day which is when their lives fall apart.

Never Look Away incorporates a compelling mix of nail-biting tension and normal people behaving credibly despite extraordinary situations. David Harwood is a great character for a thriller, being the sort of person with whom we can all identify. I really liked the fact he didn’t suddenly develop any inexplicable superhuman skills (which tends to happen in thrillers) but stumbled his way through a series of pretty astonishing events in a very believable way. His reaction as he learned that people around him might have lied was particularly credible in the way it showed his willingness to entertain the most bizarre theories rather than the notion he had been deceived. His parents are also wonderfully normal characters and even his wife Jan, though a less orthodox character, has a credibility about her.

On two successive mornings I walked an extra long way around to get to my office just to hear a little more of this book. Funnily enough the big plot twists were telegraphed but I didn’t find that detracted from the story terribly much as I was more interested in how the various players would cope with unfolding events than the play-by-play, though the strait narrative was very sold too.

I like thrillers that have an air of normality about them and don’t go too over the top with explosions and other silliness and Never Look Away fits that bill well. At its heart it’s a story of a family where all is not what it seems and plays on the sorts of fears that all of us might face at some time. Top thrills indeed.

    What about the audio book?

To be perfectly honest it took me a little while to ‘get into’ Jeffrey Cummings’ narration as he used a wide variety of voices and some of the ones for minor characters were a little odd-sounding. However after the first 20-30 minutes I was totally absorbed and Cummings had made the book whatever the audio equivalent is of a page turner.

Could not put this book down. It takes a few chapters to get into it, but after that, it is like a roller coaster ride you do not want to end! So many twists and turns, all you can do is keep turning the page!

This was agreat page turner! David Harwoods wife goes missing and he is accused of murdering her. He finds out she is not who he believes her to be. There are all sorts of twists and turns to this book and it kept me reading!

This was a story that didn’t go where you expected it to. The twists and turns started from the very beginning, but some held together better than others. We end up with two non-related story lines that are connected by one person: journalist David Harwood.David is understandably upset when his wife disappears and things start to not make sense. But I think he was allowed a little too much leeway for someone who is essentially a murder suspect. The cops in this story are largely useless, and I might have preferred if they weren’t involved at all. The resolution has a little bit of a “let’s just hurry up and tie this up” ring to it.Overall, this wasn’t a bad read, I just didn’t think it was top notch. I would give Barclay another try; this premise and I never clicked.

Cor blimey I loved this book. It raced along and I really was never sure what was going to happen next. By the time everything starts to fall into place all you want is for David to get everything sorted.Better for me than 'No Time for Goodbye' and I can't wait to read 'Too Close to Home'. It's fast paced and I really did find myself wanting to know what was going to happen next. You do have to suspend some sense of belief at times and it was possibly just a tad long but overall I couldn't wait to resolve everything. I simply wanted to know who Jan was.

Linwood Barclay once again entertains in his latest book, which begs the question: how well do you really know your spouse?

This is one of those books where you can't reveal too much of the story without spoiling plot surprises for readers. It is a stand-alone so you don't need to have read anything else by Linwood Barclay. On the other hand, I'll be very surprised if you don't go looking for other titles by this well established Canadian crime fiction author if this is your first. As he often does, Barclay has taken a scenario that others have explored, or that many parents have often thought about, and given it a strong twist. And then he delivers more shocks in rapid succession.

This is the second Linwood Barclay book I have read. Having really liked the other one (No Time for Goodbye) I was very eager to try another, and I wasn't disappointed. This is a very past-paced crime thriller and I felt like I wanted to carry on reading to find out what happened next.David Harwood is a journalist with a wife and child. One day his wife goes missing under strange circumstances, and the story is all about the investigation and what David eventually finds out about the woman he thought he knew.Linwood Barclay is very good at writing books where the main character thinks they know someone, but they really don't. He's also a master at creating a great story from some fairly implausible circumstances.I'd recommend this book to anybody who likes a good, fast thriller.

You think you know the woman you're married too, the mother of your child? All hell breaks loose when the past rears up and the "wife" takes off with her just out-of-prison con/lover and frames her husband for murder. All of Barclay's books are page turners keeping you up to all hours of the night.

This is my second Linwood Barclay thriller after NO TIME FOR GOODBYE, and I thought this one was more layered than that effort without losing any of the intriguing mystery that makes you keep reading compulsively. I really liked the parts about the newspaper falling on hard times and how staff was dealing with it, as well as the subplot with the private prison and its diabolical leader. Some parts of the mystery were pretty easy to figure out, while others came as complete shocks, but aside from a very unbelievable coincidence at the end, I was satisfactorily entertained yet again.

Small-town newspaper reporter David Harwood is surprised when his wife Jan wants them to go to a theme park with their young son Ethan because she's been depressed. She disappears in the park and David can't find anyone who's even seen her. When he is suspected of doing her harm, David's reporter instincts kick in and he learns that she is not who she claims to be. Barclay delivers another non-stop thriller. Just when you think you know where the story is going, he throws in another twist. Highly recommend all his books.

David Harwood is a newspaper reporter. He's been working on a story about a for profit prison being built in his small town. The editor keeps killing his story, even after he uncovers some shady dealings with local politicians. But he's really worried about his wife Jan. She's been acting oddly lately, saying disturbing things and just isn't her usual self. When she suggests a trip to an amusement park with their four year old son, he readily agrees, happy that she is acting more like herself. What happens at the amusement park is the stuff of nightmares. And that's just the beginning...And on that note, I absolutely refuse to give you any more of the plot! Suffice it to say, that Never Look Back had me on the edge of my seat. Barclay has crafted a non stop roller coaster of a plot, full of twists and turns that I never saw coming. The book starts off action packed and just never lets up. Barclay's foreshadowing had me reading just one more chapter long after the lights should have been out...Have you read Linwood Barclay yet? If you're a suspense/thriller fan, than you will love this Canadian author!

This is the first Linwood Barclay book I have ever read. I found it an intriguing read, with all of the twists and turns of the plotline. I didn't want to put it down! Though the ending was kind of "blah", for the most part it was a good read. I would definitely read more from this author!

Newpaper reporter David Harwood has an unusual experience at an amusement park and now his wife of 5 years is missing. David soon discovers that nothing is straightforward and the case just keeps getting more and more complex. Barclay always keeps a sense of family in his novels and I think that sets his work apart from many other suspense writers. We can identify with his characters and their goals, even if we do not always agree with their actions. David Harwood is very human and fallible, but he loves his family very much. One of my pet peeves about Barclay's (and some other authors') work concerns his use of the POV of the perp. The solution to the mystery is given away well before the middle point of the book. Since I knew this from other Barclay novels, I simply didn't read those chapters until after finishing the book. I prefer to just sail along in ignorance and take things as they come. Although not my favorite Barclay, I enjoyed this novel and spent some late nights compulsively reading.

Linwood Barclay is a master at creating unique challenging circumstances for the everyday guy down the street. His latest book Never look Away is no exception. David Harwood is in a tailspin. His wife is missing and he is the prime suspect. It's always the husband, right? Of course, as husbands always do, he is claiming he's innocent and can't understand why the police aren't out looking for his wife, Jan.I read my first Barclay book, No Time for Goodbye, when I found out I was going to receive an advance copy of Never Look Away. I was hooked and immediately set out to find and read as many Barclay books as I could. As with all of his books, at least the ones that I have read, Never Look Away, has many twists and turns ending up down a path you would not have envisioned. When I figured out fairly soon what was going on with Jan, I as a bit bummed. If you figure it out too, never fear! There are enough twists and turns remaining to hook you into being a Linwood Barclay fan. And as in Too Close to Home even the guy who "done" it isn't always what he seems.
