I found Dark Seduction at a book sale and the summary sounded really interesting so I bought it and brought it home. I will admit it did sit on the shelves for a little while, but I finally decided to read it because I needed a change. All my paranormal romance books were starting to blur together and I could not take it anymore. I needed a break from the typical creatures that go bump in the night.I have never read a Highlander book before, historical romance is not my thing, but the time traveling in Dark Seduction intrigued me. I thought there would be just enough paranormal mixed with the historical that I would be okay. Now that I am done with it I can say I am a huge Highlander fan! Man, those Scottish men are alpha to their core. I may have stepped into a more historical novel, but those alpha heroes were still very present and kept me very interested. It took me a while to slip into understanding the Scottish brogue but I got the hang of it eventually. It also forced me to slow down and enjoy the book and not just rush through like I can sometimes do. Which was a welcomed change from my normal fast pace reading habits.The world that Brenda built was mesmerizing. I have been to Scotland and there is just something about it that is mystical all on its own. It is a beautiful country and reading this book just reminded me of how wonderful it can truly be. It also makes me want to take a trip back there right now and rediscover its beauty for myself. For now though, I am going to have to settle for Brenda Joyce’s descriptions, which is fine by me.I found the idea of warriors traveling through time fascinating and a clever twist in this book. These Highland men are born to fight evil and take vows to protect the innocent. They do not take their duty lightly and they will fight to their last breath defending what they think is right. It is very alluring, but can be frustrating at the same time because they are so stubborn and do not take orders from anyone. They are also in the mindset that women are to listen to what they say and not question them, so when they come up against a modern day, strong and independent woman they are flabbergasted. Watching them squirm was delightful and I love that Brenda has chosen modern women to come back and bring these Master of Time to their knees.As for Malcolm and Claire, I fell in love with their story. Malcolm is determined not to fall in love or get married, ever. Claire on the other hand lets her heart guide her and finds it very difficult to resist Malcolm. I will admit his male chauvinistic tendencies did get on my nerves once or twice, but Claire quickly put him in his place and I appreciated that she did not just back down and give into his demands. They complimented each other very well and I truly enjoyed their story.Overall, I am very happy I decided to take this book off the shelf and give it a chance. My first trip into the world of Highlanders was successful and I will be continuing on with the series. I am very interested to see what kind of trouble Royce will get himself into in the next book and I can’t wait for Aiden’s book after that. If you like paranormal romance and want to try out a historical romance than this book will give you a little bit of both. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking a refreshing read that has the ability to suck you in, force you to slow down, and just enjoy the world you are reading about.

Once I started reading this, I thought for sure I wasn't going to like it. The overall story is about a group of super-men, called Masters, that are descendants of the old gods. Ok, so far not too bad, but there's a catch. One of their many powers is the power to mesmerize women and have their way with them (this is a romance), and if they lose control, or if they are just super evil bad guys, they can drain their sexual partner of life and use it to temporarily give them more power. This was the part that had me a little too wierded out...even for a paranormal story.The saving grace....the characters and the story itself. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you dropped a modern day single and independant woman into the medieval ages? Well, I actually have, and this book dips right into all the what if's you could possibly ask for. As our leading lady Claire finds herself in the far far ago Highlands, she finds herself ordered around and considered as nothing more than eye candy and mother material. Claire, who is used to taking care of herself in the big city is constantly at odds with the super men Masters that are smothering her.Our main man is also the primary smotherer (is that a word?). Malcolm is flabbergasted to find that Claire just won't meekly run off and do as he orders (yes orders) her to do. There are quite a few interesting arguments about time periods and what she should be allowed to do. Well, they were interesting at first and then they got a bit boring and repetitive.So off our two mains go to hunt down the evil Master, that is actaully hunting them. There are a few twists and turns along the way, and we find more and more about the past of our two stars and how they are linked in so many more ways that you think at first. If you can get your mind over or around the 'I'm going to have sex with you, but I may steal your lifeforce' part of the book, you will find a great medieval romance along with a fascinating tale of fighting the not only the evil around you, but the evil within you as well.3.5/5 (I havent decided if I'm going to continue the series or not)

I listened to this on audiobook and found the plotline ridiculous and the writing not much better. It didn't help the narrator was the worst and actually makes you dislike the heroine. I will not be reading the rest of this series.

This was a good book...thought some of the story line was lost with the massive amount of sex. Near the end the story emerged and I thought it was really great!

Dark Seduction

Malcolm of Dunroch is a Master of Time, an esoteric brotherhood of Highland warriors who travel through time fighting evil demons. On a mission to secure a sacred text, Malcolm travels to the future and encounters Claire Camden who has become a target and is in need of protection. The two leap back in time to Medieval Scotland where they must confront an ancient threat bent on destroying everything the Masters hold dear.

The world building has potential and the plot is absorbing, but neither the hero nor the heroine are particularly appealing.

Malcolm is a sexist Neanderthal, which is not unexpected given the fact that he is born in medieval times, but he has travelled to the future so he should at least me aware that a woman like Claire would not put up with his overbearing condescension.

Claire is not much better. She complains incessantly about Malcom’s behavior toward her, but spreads her legs at every opportunity, and comes across as both arrogant and superior.

Claire and Malcolm’s romance is non-sensical and is based solely on physical attraction. Their sex scenes are excessive, mechanical and emotionally detached. Moreover, the idea that a woman can be mesmerized into having sex against her will and even enjoy the experience is completely abhorrent.

In contrast, the secondary characters are far more engaging whether it be Malcom’s uncle, Royce, who appears to have given up on life, or his fellow Master, Aiden, whose bad boy tendencies hide a vulnerable heart. Even the arch-villain, Moray, who is undeniably a nasty piece of work, is more intriguing than the main couple.


In terms of the writing, Joyce’s prose style flows although the inclusion of Gaelic phrasing is unnecessary. In addition, the prologue contributes nothing to the story and only serves to confuse the reader by creating the impression that something has been missed.

All in all, the story has potential and the next book focuses on Royce so I’m willing to give it a try.

I kinda like parts of this idea but oh good gods parts of it made me want to either cry with laughter or toss the book. The author kept me reading but there were times when this story of a bookseller who finds herself embroilled in a war between semi-vampires because they suspect she has a page from an ancient book, was occasionally strained. The time travel back to Scotland and the handwaving interspersed with issues of character and questions why anyone was doing what they were doing really broke my suspension of disbelief occasionally. I didn't find it a bad book, but not great. The author has potential.

mediocre 1st in the series; the plot was a bit convoluted and the heroine was a little annoying. the hero's scottish accent was too much! will not read again but will try the 2nd book in the series.

This is the first Brenda Joyce book I've read. It was a very difficult experience to say the least. It wasn't so much the story, which I thought was fair, it was the dialogue. It was tough reading the Scottish accent all through the book. Very difficult to get used to. I think I might have been able to get into it more if I could get past the accents and the old world way of speaking. The characters were so so. Malcolm was truely a sexist which of course would go with the historical time period, but Claires "She woman" approach kind of turned me off also. The sex was suddenly there then suddenly gone. No passion built into the relationship which made the story rather boring. I have two more of her books, I hope that I enjoy them much more than this one.
