HARRY IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH.

Detective Harry Hole is meant to keep out of trouble. A young Norwegian girl taking a gap year in Sydney has been murdered, and Harry has been sent to Australia to assist in any way he can.

HE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO GET TOO INVOLVED.

When the team unearths a string of unsolved murders and disappearances, nothing will stop Harry from finding out the truth. The hunt for a serial killer is on, but the murderer will talk only to Harry.

HE MIGHT JUST BE THE NEXT VICTIM.

Appearing in English for the first time, The Bat is the legendary first novel from the worldwide phenomenon Jo Nesbo.

This was my first taste of the Scandinavian writer, Jo Nesbo - my OCD-like tendencies having caused me to spurn earlier opportunities to read him, in favour of his waiting for his first published book, The Bat to become available at my local library.
Having collected it Thursday evening, I read a chapter on Friday night, got properly stuck into it on Saturday afternoon and finished it Sunday evening.
First thoughts – better than average, without blowing me away totally. Perhaps most debuts aren’t the best work an author can produce and his later books are stronger, although this did win the 1998 Glass Key Award – for best Scandinavian Novel of the year.
Harry Hole – Nesbo’s Norwegian policeman pitches up in Sydney to assist in the investigation into the violent death of a young Norwegian woman. After initially only being assigned an observer role in the investigation, Harry and his Aboriginal babysitter, Andrew Kensington are drawn deeper into the pursuit of a serial rapist-killer.
The novel immerses Hole into Sydney’s notorious King Cross area, full of seedy bars, strip joints and prostitution. Kensington befriending Harry gives Nesbo the opportunity to provide some background history to the difficulties between the Aboriginal indigents and white-Australia, as well as imparting some knowledge on some Aboriginal cultural beliefs and legends.
Whilst I enjoyed the book in the main, particularly Nesbo’s ensemble of characters, as well as the violence that seemed never too far away from Hole, I wasn’t totally convinced by Harry’s subsequent phoenix-like rise from the ashes of his latest alcoholic lapse.
Where Nesbo did score points with me was with his readiness to dispense permanently with key characters during the execution of the investigation.
I’m looking forward to more reading more from Nesbo, though can’t decide whether to wait for the second Harry Hole instalment when it is published in English later this year – The Cockroach, or skip ahead to The Redbreast ( Hole - number 3), or alternately the standalone book Headhunters.

Harry Hole is a screw up. Sent from Norway in disgrace, this down-on-his-luck detective finds himself in Australia to consult with local law enforcement on the murder of a Norwegian tourist. Harry must acclimate himself to this vastly different culture and keep his own demons at bay if he is to uncover who is strangling all the beautiful young blondes of Sydney.

I have heard about Jo Nesbo and his Inspector Harry Hole series, and often wanted to try ti, but kept putting it off. I was given a free copy from NetGalley of this, the first book in the series. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These Nordic noir books are written in Jo Nesbo's Norwegian, and have been translated into English, and the series is very popular all over the world. Harry Hole is a flawed detective, but a very good one. In this book he has been dispatched to Sydney, Australia to investigate the murder of an ex-pat Norwegian woman. Harry arrives in Sydney with a bang, so to speak. He is never one to sit on the sidelines and observe, and the Sydney police force soon discover they have a maverick on their hands, but a maverick who gets things done, and isn't afraid to go anywhere after a killer. Harry has many personal demons. He makes friends and enemies easily, and gets drawn into a pile of danger before he's even been in Sydney for 24 hours. This is a fast-paced thriller that never lets up until the end. I like Harry, and I liked his hard-hitting style, but i found the book a little confusing, especially in the last half. It jumped around quite a bit, and that is why I knocked my review down to three stars. I think I would like to continue the series after reading this very strong introduction.

Jo Nesbo is an author I’ve had on my tbr for a very long time but you know how it is - so many books, so little time. So when I saw The Bat on Netgalley, it seemed like a great chance to check it out especially as this is the first book in the series. The book begins with Norwegian detective and protagonist, Harry Hole, in Australia hunting the killer of a young girl from Norway, He clearly feels out of his depth as he tries to acclimate himself to the country and not just to all the sun and heat. He is partnered with an Aboriginal detective who introduces him to a bit of the culture including some Aboriginal folklore. As they dig deeper into the mystery of the girl's death, they discover other similar murders and suspect they're up against a serial killer. But the more they discover, the more Harry begins to suspect his partner is holding something back. When another murder occurs, one much too close, Harry goes into a drunken tailspin and, with little time left before he has to return home, he fears this may be the one that gets away. The Bat starts out a little slow as the reader has to acclimate themselves to this new country as much as Harry but once it got going, I found myself engrossed in the tale. This a very dark and twisty mystery. Harry is your archetypal Scandinoir hero - damaged, somewhat morally ambiguous and fatalistic. He is a good detective but willing to risk not only his own safety but that of the woman he has fallen in love with, to solve the case.I did have some problems with the book. I found Harry’s relapse into heavy drinking slowed the story down somewhat. Also, although I didn’t guess the culprit, I found his motivation hard to accept. And the ending seemed more suited to a B-flick disaster movie than a noir mystery.Still, despite these criticisms, I really enjoyed the book. I found the mystery intriguing and the references to Aboriginal myths fascinating. The references to their history were also interesting but sorrowful especially as they mirrored the history of First Nations in Canada. Overall, a good introduction to the series and I will definitely be looking for more by Nesbo in the future. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.I have been vaguely aware of this series for some time and so requested a copy of this, the first instalment, to give it a try. I will not be continuing with the others. I found the translation slightly clunky, and the tone very matey and irritating. Harry was an unlikeable character, and all the women in the book were disposable and treated badly. There were constant info dumps, mainly about Aboriginal culture, but also about a whole array of other things, and these slowed things down and felt unnecessary.Disappointed.

First in a long series, and maybe the author's first. It was good enough to be worth following the series. Story was a bit disjointed and the lead character had more emotional baggage than usual in mystery series but getting through all of the preliminary stuff is part of getting started.

I started this series on the recommendation of a friend, but found it to be a combination of a short story's worth of mystery, a undergraduate course on Australian aboriginal culture, and an excess of drunken nostalgia on the part of the detective.

I changed my rating from 3 stars to 2. I finished it; give credit where due. I can't believe this is the same author that wrote the book that I just gave 5 stars to.
This author's knowledge of exotic dancers' lives and lifestyles is made up and insulting. This author's opinion of how a couple acts is deficient. I understand this is fiction, but I would appreciate some reality and believability from the characters. Too much sickening sex was put in. Ugh. I think I gave Harry Hole #2 3 stars, but I won't be reading any more Harry Hole books.

1st Harry Hole novel. Harry is invited to help the Australian Police, there has been a Norwegian girl murdered in Sydney. Harry teams up with an Aboriginal officer called Andrew Kensington. Andrew shows him around the place and introduces Harry to lots of local Characters, specially Brigitta who is a Swedish Barmaid. Harry and her quickly get together, Harry is a good officer and really works well with the local Cops. Andrew is found dead suspected suicide. Harry a recovering alcoholic does fall off the wagon, as he liked Andrew, things go a bit rocky with Brigitta too. They think there is a Serial killer on the loose called Evan White. He is a drug dealer but not a killer, the real killer who also kidnaps Brigitta and kills her, Harry was to late to save her, is an aboriginal Boxer called Toowoomba, who also killed Andrew. Toowoomba was hiding in the Sydney aquarium, Harry finds him shoots him then he is munched by a big Shark. Good introduction to Harry Hole and his history, bit silly in places though.

I liked the writing style and the characters, but I've been distracted and put this book down one too many times to keep track of the story well. So my rating may be unfair; I will definitely try the second book in this series. In this one, Norwegian detective Harry Hole is sent to Australia to consult in the murder of Inger Holter, a young woman who was a citizen of Norway. He is befriended by Aboriginal detective Andrew Kensington and also falls in love with a Swedish expat named Brigitte who was a co-worker of Inger's. A good read, sometimes humorous. Have to give Nesbo another try when I can focus better.

This is not my first book by this author but this is the first I've read in this series. I know that these first two book in this series aren't the most popular but I'm a bit of a completionist when it comes to book series so I still wanted to start at the beginning anyway. This is not a bad book by any means. I got through it very quickly and mostly enjoyed my time with it. But having read a more recent book by this author, I know this isn't the best he can do and this mystery didn't grab me in the way some others have.

In this book we're introduced to our main character Harry Hole, a police detective who is also an alcoholic. This is not the most unique character type but I liked what was done with the character here. There's an edge of humor in the character that I appreciated. This character wasn't the most unique here, but I'm interested in learning more in future books.

The mystery plot was fine. I found it kind of meandering in parts and not super gripping at times. The ending especially felt a bit all over the place. I think that there was an attempt to do a little too much and rather than making the plot more exciting, it just made things a bit chaotic. There were definitely parts of this mystery I liked. I enjoyed seeing Harry put pieces together but I just wish there had been fewer pieces to be put together.

I'm interested in seeing where this series goes. I really enjoy Nesbo's writing and even though I know the next book isn't super well loved either, I think his writing will get me through it. These books are super quick reads for me so I hope I'll get to a few more soon.

A Scandinavian mystery set entirely in Australia.
Background information on Australian and Aboriginal culture interesting. The fight scenes were unrealistic. I found the final plan to catch the culprit also extremely unprofessional, the Australian police went with the idea as if it was normal, and this adds to unbelievable aspects.

I would call this a gritty mystery. The main character is as damaged and dysfunctional as it can get. His life is also unbelievably riddled with tragedies. I will read (or listen to) another mystery by Jo Nesbo to see how he gets on with his life and investigations. I want to see if a healthier level of reality can prevail.

Note on the audio book: The narrator did a good job but I found his voice a bit monotone and uninspiring. Not best suited to action thriller genre, or maybe chosen because of that to bring down the level of over-the-top fight scenes.

Harry is a police officer/detective from Norway. When a Norwegian woman is murdered in Australia, where she’s been living, Harry heads down to help the local police with the investigation. It seems that this may actually be the work of a serial killer, though it wasn’t initially obvious. Add in an Australian aboriginal police officer, a homosexual clown, and a Swedish barmaid as a love interest, and we have “The Bat”.I didn’t find the backstory/personal interest story all that interesting. I do know I’m not as much a fan of noir mysteries. Is this one? Not sure. Also not always a fan of police procedurals. Is this one? It had a bit of that feeling to it (of both), but maybe it didn’t quite fit the definitions. Anyway, I’m calling this one “ok”. It did pick up at the very end, but somehow I think I missed an important tie-up. If I didn’t miss it, then something went very wrong. I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series.

Just jumped in to a little of this. Put aside to read something else. Will be back to it shortly.

And. Finished. The long-awaited translation of the first Norwegian Detective Harry Hole novel. The background here could've always been guessed, but to read about Harry's early history and specifically his "damaged" state and his drinking is very interesting. Very.
PS I purchased this Kindle edition from the British publisher from my French Amazon account. Not yet available in the US.

The Bat. Jo Nesbo. 2012. The first Harry Hole novel. This is another book, I pulled out of my numerous “to be read stacks” that I must have gotten at Trade n’ Books. Gosh, I hope she opens soon! Harry is a Norwegian policeman. I think I may have read The Redbreat, but am not sure. Harry is sent to Australia to look into the murder of a young Norwegian woman. He is to observe, not get involved, but that is easier said than done, and he is soon tangled in police business and a budding love affair. Is a serial murderer, and is it someone they know? Very noir, very violent, and a little too much local color for me.

This was my brother's find and it's a great one. I've been aware of Nesbo for a long time and have no idea why I have never read any of this stuff. But this book 1 in this series is a delight. Great characters, good plot and more already ready for me in the same series. The perfect storm of reading.

This audiobook was narrated by John Lee, a phenomenal voice actor and narrator who had many different dialects and accents down perfectly. I just wish this series was more my style of novel. I was pretty bored throughout most the novel, and I'm unsure whether I will bother with the rest of the series. It was just.......bleh.
3.5 stars, and recommended for lovers of Norwegian mystery novels.

I decided to read this since I really liked one of Jo Nesbo’s previous books. Since this is book one I was surprised that it took place outside his normal area of being a police officer. It did allow for him to explain his backstory to people that were strangers to him. One of the things that made this a bit different was how many times Harry was wrong about who the killer was and how he kept thinking he had the right killer.

An interesting audio to listen to since no one had an American accent in the book.

This is the first in the Harry Hole series. I enjoyed the detective part of the story, but some of the flashbacks to his personal life (previous relationship with Kristin) did not seem to add anything to the story. Maybe it will become more apparent in subsequent novels.

In this story, Harry, a Norwegian Detective is sent to Australia to assist in the investigation of a Norwegian Citizen who has been murdered there. He has been instructed to stay out of trouble and when he arrives is again reminded that he is there to observe. Well, Harry does more than observe. He insinuates himself into the case. He is working with an Aboriginal names Kensington and together they get in fights, drive all around Australia, stir up additional trouble, develop some intimate relationships and finally Harry is instrumental in solving the crime. I am going to try the next one to see how it is. This series gets high ratings so I am sure the books will get better.

Synopsis: Harry Hole is searching for the murderer of a Norwegian girl in Sydney, Australia. He gets very involved with another policeman and takes it so hard when the cop is murdered that he falls off the wagon. When he goes back to drinking he not only gets some booze induced insights, but he loses his girlfriend permanently.Review: I was with him until he went back to drinking; then a bunch of my empathy vanished. I did like the ending.

Book on CD read by John LeeBook #1 in the Inspector Harry Hole series. Harry is a member of the Oslo Crime Squad, and he’s sent to Sydney Australia after a young Norwegian woman is murdered. Harry’s role is to “observe” and offer advice, if asked, but he’s not to interfere with the investigation. Of course, Harry can’t just sit idly by. First he befriends one of the lead detectives, and then one of the witnesses. Before long he’s pointed out the pattern of killings that point to a psychopathic serial killer. The first thriller I read by Nesbø was The Snowman, set in Oslo and featuring Harry Hole. When I realized it was part of a series, I decided to go back to book one, except that at that time it wasn’t available in the USA. I’m glad I finally got to it. Nesbø writes a tight , fast-paced thriller with plenty of clues, several red herrings, a flawed but likeable lead detective, and an interesting setting. I’ll definitely read more of this series. John Lee does a fine job narrating the audio version. He has good pacing and I loved his Aussie accent! He even does a pretty good job with the female voices.

Another series? Ermagod! But, I went ahead and dove in and I was not disappointed. I trusted the recommendation on the author because it came from a friend and fellow reader who has never steered me wrong yet. This time, I decided to start at Book #1 and read them in order. The main character is Harry Hole (pronounced Hoo-leh), a Norwegian detective who has had been through some professional and personal hard times as all the best fictional detectives seem to have in common. He has been sent to Sydney, Australia to assist in solving the murder of a Norwegian girl who was on a tourist visa. The first thing I loved about the book was that I lived in Sydney for several years. Ironically, the murdered girl’s flat was located in Hereford Street, Glebe which was actually one street away from where I lived. So I had the vicarious thrill of knowing the neighborhood intimately. The next vicarious thrill was that the murdered girl, who was straight, worked as a bartender at the largest gay men’s piano bar in Sydney, The Albury. Now, my friends and I started many an evening of clubbing at the Albury. I had many friends who were bartenders, drag performers, singers in the piano bar. I went to many an after-memorial night there to celebrate fallen friends. I had many gay Mardis Gras nights there and Oxford Street was somewhere I spent many wonderful times.Alas, The Albury is gone. As the community changes, morphs and assimilates, we have lost wonderful places. But I love that it lives on in this book. Harry is housed in Kings Cross which is the red light district of Sydney. I have millions of stories about Kings Cross too – all good. The Bourbon and Beef is somewhere many late nights and early mornings have ended.A secondary location is the rain forests in northern New South Wales. Most particularly, Nimbin, which is a hippie town trapped in time. I spent time on a commune in that area so again, wonderful memories and to have so many rolled into one book sold me on the series right there. In a wonderful stroke of serendipity, the story itself is very, very good. The mystery is complex; the characters are very rich and some of the clues dropped on Harry are done wrapped in aboriginal Dreamtime Stories shared by several aboriginal characters that populate the novel.I am a convert. Harry is a wonderful character and there are plenty of books out there to get into before you have to wait for the next novel in the series. I love to find an author I can get stuck into and this is one for fans of a good mystery and a traveling Norwegian detective with issues.

I've signed up to take a Harry Hole walking tour of Oslo, so I figured I should read some of the books first. Of course, this one takes place entirely in Australia. Harry Hole is in the country to follow up on the murder of a Norwegian woman. What follows is a lengthy journey through Australian aboriginal culture, the drug trade, Harry's alcoholism and past relationships, and sky diving. There were parts when I wasn't positive I was reading things in order, with flashbacks shoved in somewhat disjointedly. I don't have strong feelings about Harry or the story in general, but I do believe I need to read at least one more installment in the series before I form a solid opinion.

John Lee's excellent narration improves this novel, in which Harry Hole takes a long and winding route to track down a serial killer.
