This was a wonderful time traveling adventure! This is the first book I have read by Eoin Colfer and I am sure it will not be the last. He does a good job bringing two different worlds together in a frantic game of cat and mouse.
In current time we have young Chevron, a 16 year old FBI agent who is hustled away from being further known by the public. She is sent to London, to 'baby-sit' a pot with the instructions to notify her new superior if anything comes out. For 6 months she is bored when suddenly a boy materializes holding a knife over a mutated man. The boy, Riley,is from the past 110 year ago and warns her that Garrick is Death and is coming for him!
This book is creative and fast paced! At first I was baffles about a 16 year old being in the FBI but that does get explained. At least enough to make the story flow along. Chevron and Riley are constantly trying to run away from Garrick, who is one deadly opponent! I loved Riley's character the best. He seemed very down to earth, practical, caring, smart and fun to be around. While the plot jumped around between the three main characters' points of view, Riley's is one I would have liked to see more. Chevron seemed to have a neat personality, with a sassy edge but I just couldn't get quite as into her. Garrick annoyed me. Also, he is merged with another man after he travels through time which muddles his character too much for my taste.
Again, the pace was great for most of this book. Constantly moving forward, while unfolding lots of back-story on the characters. While parts of the book were predictable it was still an enjoyable read and the ending does leave you wondering what is ahead in the next book!

Really fun book. The narrator's voice for Chevron bugged me throughout the book, but maybe it was his attempt at doing a Native American accent. The rest of the narration was quite good, and I enjoyed it.

I wavered between three and four stars for this. I really wanted to like it more than I did. It's good, just not Artemis Fowl-pure genius good. It's the story of Riley, who is apprenticed (make that more like enslaved) by a nefarious magician/assassin in Victorian England and Chevron, a teenage FBI agent who finds herself on an apparently boring assignment in modern day London. When Chevron's latest assignment ends up involving time travel, she and Riley are caught up in a dangerous game of hide and seek with super villains and huge stakes. This book is literally, extremely bloody. From the first chapter to the last, bloody death and injury abounds. However, while I thought the gore was a little over the top, Colfer's signature enthralling plot and well drawn characters eventually engaged me and kept me reading until the end. I'm hoping this series gets better and better, now that the main characters are well launched.

A fourteen-year-old urchin from Victorian London travels through time to the twenty-first century. There (or is it then?), he meets a seventeen-year-old girl who happens to be an FBI operative. A seriously deranged murderer (is there another kind?) who has traveled with the boy from the past is after them, so they attempt to escape back to Victorian London. Alas, this does not shake their pursuer. There a several unlikely elements to this story that should not be looked at with an incredulous eye, but it is a fun YA adventure. I didn't find any of the characters exactly likable, but they were interesting enough to care about. I'll read the second book of the series.

Her job is to keep watch: that is it, no touching, no questions, no nothing. That is, until the pod awakens and knocks out about a quarter of the city’s power.Riley is a boy living Victorian London as an orphan with a madman that has taken him under his wing as a magician/ assassin. Upon Riley’s mission to kill someone to prove himself to Albert Garrick, something goes terribly wrong and he is literally sucked into the future…where he meets Chevy.Review: W.A.R.P. was such a cool book; it combined time-travel with assassins and a conspiracy theory plotline. It was so much fun to listen to. Chevy is a strong teenage female who is trying to find her place in life and with the FBI, while Riley is a little more vulnerable, but only because he is petrified of Garrick.The time travel was done in a very interesting way and there were enough questions answered throughout that I did not feel annoyed at the end waiting for another book in the series. The book can be read as a stand alone, but based on the Epilogue there will be another installment.Chevy and Riley are pared together well, both stubborn and interesting with their background stories and I am interested to see where their lives lead them through this series of books. I really liked Riley more than Chevy, which was different for me. Chevy was very stand-off-ish whereas Riley was more open and inviting about himself and his feelings and I enjoyed that about his character.This book is for a young adult/ middle grade audience, and as of this book does not include a romantic/ girl swooning element. There is a lot of action and a lot of people die…and Albert Garrick is creepy and horrific when it comes to his stories and character profile, but all in all a wonderful read for all ages!

Great combination of futuristic and historical, combined with creepy supernatural villain. Riley and Chevron are appealing heroes and there is plenty of action and smart mouthed teenagers.

While this does suffer from the same problem that all of Colfer's work does - not suspending disbelief enough - it is a fun story. However, the narrator makes Chevie sound like a cross between every movie stereotype Native Brave and Wiseguy...and middle aged.

This book is about a man and his apprentice and a girl the man and apprentice live in the olden days of London and the girl live in modern day London. The plot of the story is the man named Albert Garrick is an assassin and his apprentice named Riley doesn't want to be an assassin because it means killing innocent people and the girl is an FBI agent having to help Riley beat Garrick but Garrick is very skilled in all fighting ways the girls name is Chevron but goes by Chevie. When Garrick and Riley discover the portal Chevie know has to help Riley escape from Garrick going through both time periods. but while in the past they get stopped by a thug leader they have to find a way to escape from him to. While Riley and Chevie are trying to get away Garrick is busy recruiting people to help find his 3 targets. A man named Tibor Charismo claims Riley and Chevie and takes them for interviews on his new story. Garrick knows Tibor from a mission before so he knows where he lives and tries to get the couple there. But when the local militia capture Tibor the kids flee to a portal. Garrick is stuck trying to locate them again. In the end the two get back to modern day and destroy the time machine forever.I didn't really like this book. It was very predictable so I was never really able to enjoy it. It was also very boring because it was the same thing every time they would find an enemy flee then do it again. the end was a very boring and predictable ending I just wanted to close the book and go to the next. I would not suggest this book to someone.

This book was amazing from the start. If you like action this is the book for you action starts on the first page and just keeps getting more intense!This book takes time travel, mystery, and murder and puts it into a 300+ page adventure. In all i thought this book was good and i would recommend it to anyone, but it just seemed that it was longer than it should of because it stayed on one topic and didn't really talk about anything else.The book is about a young assassins apprentice that is from the 1800's and they time travel to the 21 century. The apprentice meets an FBI agent and they are running through time away from Albert Garrick "Death itself!"

I was super excited to see what Eoin Colfer was going to come up with next, and I don't think his fans will be disappointed. There are plenty of twists and turns and surprises with this one, with all the parts coming together to make the story work. And a workable time-travel idea is always a plus for me. I definitely will recommend this for older followers of Artemis Fowl.

I have always been a fan of Eoin Colfer. From that first moment when I discovered Artemis Fowl, I was hooked.

When I picked up The Reluctant Assassin I went in with high hopes... maybe too high. It was a good read, but not great.

Warp is the new YA series and it definitely different than his previous one. The FBI has technology to hide important witnesses in the past to keep them safe. Of course this goes wrong and an agent in the past is killed and someone from the past comes to the future and is changed by the warp technology since it isn't completely safe. This creates a super villain for our teen heroes to beat. Good triumphs over evil but in the end there is still a bigger bad guy in the wings that started the entire process. An ok read but I don’t think I would bother with the rest of them. I would recommend it to YA readers thought.

I really enjoyed this book!! I usually like Eoin Colfer's stuff, though this one is on a whole other level for me. I haven't read/listened to many steampunk novels, but after finishing "The Reluctant Assassin," I'd like to read more steampunk books.

I liked both of the protagonists - I thought that they were interesting and well-rounded, as was the plot. Right from the get-go, Colfer grabbed my attention, and took me on an exciting ride through time that was full of wit, nearly impossible odds and adventure!

I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!

This is a 2014 Lone Star selection. It’s a new series that involves time travel, so it is considered fantasy.The novel begins in 1898 in London with Albert Garrick teaching Riley how to be an assassin. Riley doesn’t want to kill anyone, but Garrick holds his hand to plunge the knife in Riley’s “first” kill. The old man awakes and touches a necklace and the old man and Riley are transported to the current time period. The old man is dead and Riley is arrested.In the current time period, Chevron Savano is a teenage FBI agent who has been sent to London to watch a time machine because she supposedly botched an assignment in Los Angeles. She doesn’t know there is a time machine until Riley and a dead guy pop up. She believes Riley’s exclamations that he didn’t kill the dead guy. Riley claims an evil man will find him and they need to run. No one believes that one man can take trained fighters down. When the team goes back in time to get evidence, Garrick is waiting. He kills them all and transports to the present.The rest of the novel is a chase. Garrick wants Chevron and Riley, particularly Riley. He is now all-knowing because of his journey through the wormhole. He’s unstoppable. Most of the novel takes place in 1898, with the reader wondering how Chevron can return to the present.I liked the book for the most part; I liked the characters and the author did a good job presenting Garrick as evil. It’s an interesting time travel book with good battling evil.

After a slightly shaky and awkward start, I found myself utterly hooked on this mad-cap Victorian adventure novel. Well, when I saw "Victorian" I mean, semi-Victorian, because it is somewhat set in the modern day as well. Rather gory and a bit more violent than one might expect in a book aimed at children - thus I would recommend it for readers aged 10 or those of a less than squeamish nature. The villain is really very nasty - he doesn't just threaten - he follows up on his threats. A fairly high body count too. The characters - Victorian reluctant assassin, Riley and Chevron, teenage wanna-be-FBI agent, are both well developed and the plot moves along at a cracking pace. Overall, I highly enjoyed it and look forward to what Riley gets up to next!

Riley is a reluctant apprentice in Victorian London to Albert Garrick, a magician turned murderer for hire. He is about to commit his first killing, with Garrick poised behind him ready to dispatch Riley and his victim if he falters. But the intended victim turns out to be a scientist from the future, part of the FBI's Witness Anonymous Relocation Program. A wormhole in time transports Riley to the future, with Garrick close behind - an Albert Garrick who has merged with the persona of Felix Smart, an agent of the FBI, and now has all his knowledge and skills. Riley is taken into custody by the FBI, and when Garrick tracks him down to kill his one-time apprentice, escapes back to his own time aided by Chevron Savano, a young FBI trainee. Garrick is not far behind, and they are chased through Victorian London by a murderously pathological illusionist of unfathomable abilities. The characters here are not (yet) as compelling as those in Colfer's "Artemis Fowl" series, but Riley and Chevie are quite intriguing, and I look forward to seeing where the following books take us. Eoin Colfer's deadpan humor is in fine fettle here. And for the record, outside of perhaps Garrison Keillor, Eoin Colfer gives the most entertaining author readings/signings I have ever been to.

4 Stars*This is an uncorrected galley I received through NetGalley*In Victorian London a teenaged orphan boy, Riley, lives in fear of his guardian, Albert Garrick, an illusionist turned assassin. When Riley is thrust into the future he gains a friend in nineteen year old FBI Agent Chevron Savano. Agent Savano has her own troubles to run from after making a mistake on a big case in Los Angeles. Being a laughing stock to her fellow agents she has something to prove. So when Albert Garrick comes looking for his apprentice Chevron and Riley work together to save both the past and the future from the assassin.This is packed full of edge of the seat action. The pacing was perfect and this could be a very quick read if someone has the time to devote. It really is a lot of fun. The time travel sequences are not confusing and it’s easy to follow. I was afraid it would feel congested or cluttered but it all flowed very well. There was some laugh out loud moments for me as well which I wasn’t really expecting. My only complaint would be that I didn’t really get attached to any of the characters. They are likable but lacking something. That could change with future installments. I would recommend this one to anyone young or old for a fast and fun read.
