Grady Vocational High School in Brooklyn, learning a trade in woodworking and later joined the Army. After completing active duty, Ferrigno worked for the New York City Transit Authority as an ironworkers helper and later as an ironworker. He then transferred to the Department of Transportation, also as an ironworker, retiring on disability thirteen years later.
