At seventeen he went to sea, passing an examination for a Certificate of Competency as Master of a Foreign-Going Steamship at the age of twenty-seven. He remained at sea, sailing under six flags on a variety of ships, some very small and others very big, for some twenty-five years.
Ashore he worked in mainly maritime jobs in the Middle East, Australia, Canada, Mexico, England and the United States. In New York City he was elected to the New York Academy of Sciences, and he taught English as a foreign language to immigrants in New Jersey.
