He served in the Army from 1941-1946 in North Africa and Italy, where he was taken prisoner of war, and from 1949-1963 in the Territorial Army. Until 1970 he was in charge of Educational Television for the British Council. He is also the author of a number of articles and books on Napoleonic and Victorian warfare, most notably Wellington as Military Commander (1963) and Britannia Sickens (1970).
