Brandenburg is a freelance writer, poet, trade publication contributor and now e-reader/print book author. She belongs to the Military Romance and Suspense Writers club, Mystery/Suspense writers, Thrill Writers, and Writers Unite, writers and critique groups. J. L. describes herself as ‘a purposeful writer, but an accidental author.’
Life as a writer began journaling in notebooks. Bonanza was her favorite show and she wrote what is now called Fanfiction type of stories. In her youth, her imagination was vivid, leading to embellishing everyday stories. Her sixth-grade teacher handed her a notebook and shared, ‘saying untruths out loud is called lying, but writing them on paper is called fiction,’ which was advice she took to heart. During her career, she contributed stories to trade journals geared toward Social Workers, which is her background and degree.
Her writing style is influenced by a variety of things. Writers, such as Len Deighton, Michael Crichton, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, David Baldacci, R.B. Parker, Nora Roberts, and Patricia Cornwell are particular favorites. The characters in the Honey Saga exhibit a great work ethic, which was consistently modeled by her mother and ex-husband. Outside influences such as domestic violence and religious practices also find their way into many of her stories. She prefers books that follow a central set of characters which allows the reader to develop a deeper and ongoing relationship with the stories.
Ms. Brandenburg states her personal life philosophy is to do the right thing all the time even when no one is looking. This puts her character Tony Jefferies, aka Adam Carmichael, in direct opposition to her core value. The Honey Saga tells the story of the undercover agent’s desire to return to a “regular” life when he falls in love with a widow.
These books are written as an example that older individuals still hope to find true love, can be insecure or have doubts, all which can be magnified in a youth-oriented society. The author says Joni and Adam are older than many main characters. They bring their baggage as well as flawed expectations into their relationship.
J. L. Brandenburg was born in Vincennes, Indiana, but now resides in Central Illinois with her teenaged children, two cats, and three dogs.weniger sehen
