As Scandinavian crime heroes go, Harry Hole is a cliché. He is intelligent, tall and handsome, admired by his peers, highly observant, innovative, troubled, a loner and prone to breaking rules. Harry may not be the strongest argument for reading Nesbø’s crime novels. Their strengths lie elsewhere: in their wonderfully complex plots, eclectic characters and especially their seamy settings in Oslo. In THE REDEEMER, Nesbø mixes murder-for-hire, the Salvation Army and corporate greed with a touch of police corruption to give the reader a thrilling ride. Although its Oslo setting has ample seediness (container terminals, soup kitchens, plenty of bad weather, etc.) the key action occurs in a place familiar to any tourist who has visited this Scandinavian city: the picturesque pedestrian walkway on Karl Johans Gate between the central train station and the royal palace. The plot includes all of the elements readers have come to expect from a Hole novel: plenty of surprises, clues dropped here and there, unrelenting action and lots of really interesting characters.

Ein kroatischer Auftragskiller bringt einen Mann von der Heilsarmee um. Harry Hole, der einen neuen Chef hat, ermittelt. Das Buch ist sehr spannend, denn obwohl man als Leserin einiges voraus weiß, gibt es doch so viele überraschende Twists, so dass es immer wieder fesselt. Das Ende ist dann zwar schon sehr um die Ecke gedacht, aber ebenfalls stimmig und spannend.

I've been getting back into this series and honestly, most of these books are in the 3.5-star area for me. I do consider that a good rating but it's not mind-blowing. However, something about them keeps me coming back. We start what is almost a new arc for Harry in this book and I liked seeing the introduction of some new characters. Like with any long series, there's a lot of back and forth with Harry's personal relationships, especially with Rakel. That can get a little old, especially since I know that there like 6 more books, I think with more on the way. There's also the recurring theme of Harry's alcoholism, which is written realistically but can also be tiresome. Honestly, I mostly only go above 3.5 with these books if I really like the mystery and this one didn't really stand out for me. I am looking forward to the next one because it seems like it's one of the most popular ones so I'll be interested to see if it's a favorite for me.

Solid entry in the Harry Hole series. Good whodonit with good, witty writing and Hole is an intriguing character. I would rate The Redeemer a notch below its predecessor The Deveil's Star, but I did enjoy this one quite a bit.

adult Scandinavian crime thriller. I did ok with the dark/twisted in the following Harry Hole book (#7 the snowman) but had to stop abruptly in the middle of this--the reconstruction of a murder scene was just so gory and terrible it nearly made me black out (had to shut the book and sit on the floor for a while until the spell passed). I don't really NEED to finish this, so I am returning to the library... but there is a part of me that still wants to know what happens.

The sixth book in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo is The Redeemer. The theme of redemption is repeated throughout this story that has Harry trying to locate a contract killer before he kills again. His first victim in Norway was Robert Karlsen, a Salvation Army worker. Then it appears that he may have gone after the wrong man and is in fact hunting a different Salvation Army officer, Jon Karlsen, the brother of Robert. Harry is also dealing with a new boss in this book, one that may not be as tolerant of his methods as his former boss was.Harry continues to recover from the break up of his previous relationship, and he is also testing his sobriety as he battles with his guilt over the death of a colleague. While tracking the Croatian assassin, Harry becomes aware that the one to watch out for is whoever hired the professional killer to start with.As with most of the Harry Hole books, The Redeemer is a long complex book of over 500 pages. There are in fact, a multitude of plot lines that raise the tension and keep the pages turning. These various plots eventually connect into one cohesive narrative. I found The Redeemer to be both an absorbing and rewarding read.

What a good job I remembered to jot down all the characters as they arrived with arrows to show connections. I didn't start quite at the beginning so I missed Georgi and Tinto and never quite caught up with them - but followed most of the rest. The translation is very good in keeping up the pace but there is some odd stuff there that might be down to the translation. What on earth is a urinal block? Air freshener? The author makes a good case for a plot peppered with coincidence but joined by the history and lives of the characters. This one is a back story for me as I leapfrogged it by going to see the film of The Snowman - and I read some of the earlier books out of order, but I'm impressed how well they work as a stand alone stories. Bit gruesome at times..... But another half star for the many interesting characters.

As my readers know, I have fallen hard for this author and his main character Harry Hole. Harry continues his off again-on again affair with the bottle and his own demons as well as rubbing everyone he meets the wrong way.I had a hard time putting this one down. In fact, another all nighter was pulled when I got halfway in and just could not put the book down. So be warned – late nights ahead. Get your flashlight or nook under the blankets and prepare for a wild and thrilling ride.Somewhere in Croatia, there is an assassin known as “The Little Redeemer”. He has been deeply affected by war crimes against Croatian’s during the dissolution of Yugolslavia and the ethnic cleansing that occurred. He is on the hunt for a member of the Salvation Army with ties to the region.The Salvation Army in Oslo plays a central role in this story. The homeless shelter, the hierarchy of the Army and the officers housing provide the base for most of the action. Right from the beginning it is difficult to tell who in the army is involved, how and why. Quite frankly, it does not get resolved until the end which is what made this so compelling to read.Nesbo continues to add depth not to just Harry but many of the usual supporting characters as well. Beatte Lon, the woman who never forgets a face as well as other officers and new characters. One of the things that I love about local writers describing their cities, they are prone to reveal the underbelly.I think people outside of the region view Scandinavia in general with a poetic vision of egalitarianism, low crime and problem free society. Nesbo dispels it but even at its lowest ebb, one can easily see that a society that takes care of its own is still better than those in which many of us live. That being said, drugs and prostitution as well as homelessness and alcoholism are oft discussed in Nesbo’s books.The interesting idea of redemption is explored here. From the Christian Army beliefs, it is fiery rhetoric but something that one has to rely on in the abstract. From Hole’s and The Little Redeemer’s position, it is an event that is active, direct and required to even the scales of justice.Scandinavian Noir opened with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series but I am so happy that it brought us Harry Hole. And yes, I have another two in the queue. Sigh!

Sixth in the Harry Hole series. This one is full of switchbacks. I was pretty sure who the ultimate villain was, until about two thirds of the way through, when the twists began to baffle me. Nesbo continually misdirects the reader, at least this reader, and maybe I should know by now that the obvious is never the answer in Nesbo's mysteries, but this one was a doozy. For the squeamish, there is only one truly bizarrely violent episode, although there is, shall I say, more standard violence, where people get shot or otherwise damaged.Depending on how much you are likely to be misled, and how much you enjoy this, I guess this might rate three stars or four stars.

Now for the book: Cold. People are freezing. Icy fog everywhere. Thin coats. Forgotten longies. Murder, shootings, stabbings. And rapes and beatings. Salvation Army crooks. Nice watches. Junkies. Immigrant abuse. Right wing police cells. and Harry Hole stops fighting his boss.

The plot exhausts itself and the reader too about page 300. But you brave on.

You realize you never want to visit Norway. That's OK.

READ IN DUTCH

This was the first book I read by Jo Nesbø and I enjoyed it. It reminded me to the Wallander-series by Henning Mankell. Both have a main character who isn't without problems or thinks life isn't difficult sometimes. The story was nice to read, the writing style was good as well. I didn't gues the end of the story till I got there, so it still was a surprise for me. (Which in my opinion is very good. How many books have I read while knowing the end after some pages...) It made me curious to the other books by Jo Nesbø, and I have already read Marekors, but am still planning to read more of his books...

You'll never look at a vaccuum cleaner the same again. I love the way Nesbo murders his victims! From chasing down a contract killer from Yugoslavia to figuring out who the rapist is from a cold case featuring the Salvation Army detective Harry Hole, our flawed protagonist, remains mainly sober for this chase through the bitter cold Norwegian winter. I read all of the books in the series and this was right up there with the best of Nesbo.

Kurz vor Weihnachten wird ein Mitglied der Heilsarmee mitten in Oslo auf offener Strasse erschossen. Es gibt keinerlei Hinweise oder Indizien, wer der Täter ist oder warum diese Person ermordet wurde. Doch kurz danach wird klar, dass der Täter das falsche Opfer ausgewählt hatte, denn auf ein weiteres Mitglied der Heilsarmee wird mit derselben Waffe ein Anschlag verübt. Die Spuren führen zuerst nach Zagreb, doch von dort wieder zurück nach Oslo und man beginnt zu ahnen, dass auch in der Heilsarmee nicht alles eitel Sonnenschein zu sein scheint.
Harry Hole, Kriminalhauptkommissar, der die Trennung von Rakel, seiner großen Liebe, und deren Sohn Oleg nur mühsam zu verkraften schien, scheint dennoch langsam darüber hinweg zu kommen, ohne erneut dem Alkohol zu verfallen. Doch neue Unannehmlichkeiten sind im Anmarsch: Sein alter Chef Bjarne Mᴓller, der oft genug seine schützende Hand über Harry gehalten hat, wird nach Bergen versetzt und sein neuer Vorgesetzter, Gunnar Hagen, scheint ihm nicht allzu wohlgesonnen zu sein. Doch Harry kommt erstaunlich gut klar, was wohl auch an dem etwas tiefergehenden Flirt mit einer der Frauen aus der Heilsarmee zu liegen scheint.
'Der Erlöser' ist spannend wie alle bisherigen Harry Hole-Bücher mit einem erstaunlich stabilen Protagonisten, was seine Fans sicherlich freuen wird. Ebenso wie zuvor werden in diesem Band aktuelle gesellschaftliche Problemsituationen miteingeflochten, wenn auch nicht in der gewohnten Ausführlichkeit. Dennoch: Nichts scheint zu weit hergeholt, die Zusammenhänge wirken plausibel und glaubwürdig und auch das Ende um den Erlöser löst beim Lesenden eher Verständnis als Kopfschütteln aus. Jo Nesbᴓ ist mit dem neuen Band um seinen Helden wiederum ein wirklich gelungener Thriller geglückt und ich freue mich bereits auf das nächste noch zu lesende Buch.

„Der Erlöser“ war der vierte Krimi von Jo Nesbø, den ich gelesen habe. Wie gewohnt war er spannend, es gab die üblichen Cliffhanger, die sich zugleich oft als Aufhänger für überraschende Wendungen entpuppten, und die Auflösung des Falles war wirklich nicht vorhersehbar. In diesen Disziplinen liegt wohl die Stärke dieser Reihe. Aber zugleich kam mir zum ersten Mal der Gedanke, etwas in der Art bei Nesbø schon gelesen zu haben, zwar mit anderen Akteuren (auf der Seite der Bösen) und anderem Kontext, aber doch ähnlich in der Konstruktion – und hier liegt wohl mein Hauptproblem mit dieser Art von Krimis. Um wirklich überraschend, aber doch einigermassen schlüssig auflösbar sein, braucht es ein höchst raffiniert ausgedachtes Verbrechen, das gerade dadurch reichlich konstruiert wirkt und den Leser innerlich irgendwie unbeteiligt lässt. Zugleich fehlt es mir doch etwas an Tiefe und Anspruch: Das wurde mir bewusst, weil die Kapitel tragen zwar grosse Begriffe als Überschrift wie „Erlösung“, „Schuld“, „Gnade“, „Auferstehung“ etc. tragen, doch die Inhalte das Versprechen dieser Titel in keiner Weise halten können. Das doch sehr überraschende Schlusskapitel, das auf vorige Fälle Bezug nimmt, war dann aber wirklich Klasse und brachte die vorher vermisste Tiefe. Daher dreieinhalb Sterne.

A professional killer shoots a member of the Salvation Army during a concert and Harry Hole has to search the lower echelons of Oslo to figure out who could have it out for a soldier of God. Other than the usual Nesbø-quirk where it sometimes takes some work figuring out who is the topic of a scene, this is a great mystery; it's well-plotted, suspenseful, full of great characters, and the stakes are high for everyone involved. If you like twisty mysteries, Harry Hole is your guy, but I'd recommend reading them in the original publication order or things will get a little confusing at times.

Two words that can be use to describe my feelings after reading Jo Nesbø's The Redeemer:

Mind. Blown.

Honestly, The Redeemer was too much. It was incredible. The way that that Nesbø described and connected the various threads to form an amazing literary tapestry was amazing! The Redeemer starts off with the rape of a 14 year-old girl in the early 1990s in one of Norway's Salvation Army camps. It flashes forward to 2003, when the present story takes place, where a newly sober and single Det. Harry Hole is investigating the death of an officer who was part of Norway's Salvation Army.

Could these events be related?

Duh. This is a Nesbø novel. Nothing in them is ever filler. Even the few pit stops in Croatia detailing the assassin's life up until to they find their target was important in the grander scheme of the narrative.

I was really impressed with this novel because, for all intents and purposes, I should have been über confused. There was so much going on but everything but everything was explained in a matter of fact manner. I haven't admire Harry Hole more though. It was nice to see him not succumb, completely, to his uncontrollable alcoholism. He was in rare fighting with all of his synapses firing.

A little bit of a SPOILER included:The main story is about a professional killer who kills an important member of the Salvation Army. The story focuses on the killer trying to survive in a foreign country without any resources and Harry Hole trying to figure out the “who-dun-it”, etc. There are a few small twists but nothing that “WOWed” me.I've read all the Harry Hole books up to this one so far. I have to say, this is probably my least favorite one. I think Nesbo writing improved since the beginning of the series but I just didn't get into this story as much as some of the others. I have been a BIG Harry Hole fan but I am slowly starting to lose interest in the series…this loss of interest stared before but has increased with this book.The story seemed to stall in some sections but not all of it was slow. It has some really good parts but as I have noticed with past Jo Nesbo books, he makes some “errors” with facts. In one area he is discussing the dog meat found in someone’s vomit and they state that the food must have come from a Chinese restaurant because that is the “only place in the world that eats dog”. NOPE. In fact there are MANY countries that eat dog…Korea being the most well-known. Its little things like this that are starting to annoy me with his books (in previous books he makes completely uneducated “guesses” about firearms and other things…no, revolvers DON’T have magazines/clips Mr. Nesbo.Overall: 3.5 stars

I had not read anything in the Harry Hole series before The Redeemer. I found the book a great entry into the series and plan on reading and/or listening to more installments. The book is a conventional but very expert police mystery with just the right amount of exotic Norwegianess thrown in. The reader was a pro's pro. This was a thoroughly entertaining and even thought-provoking listen.

I liked less the first half of the volume than the previous ones in the series. Too much, too complicated storylines, a story seemingly not going anywhere. But at the end the well known Nesbo feeling returned, the solution of the case of the hitman killings in Oslo and especially the closing chapter were unforgettable.

This is the earliest Harry Hole I've read, though it's actually mid-series. It's also in my view better than the ones that have come out more recently. An excellent and gripping story.

I enjoyed this, it was gripping without being too graphic. The plot finished up being a little convoluted and dare I say contrived. So much so that all the twists and turns were explained by one character to another in the last chapters. If that kind of plot device is necessary then it makes me think the story has become overly complicated.

Cutting like a dream sequence, we encounter a 14 year old girl who is raped while attending summer camp, a Croatian contract killer taking down a target in Paris, a Salvation Army officer meeting his girlfriend, and Oslo detective Harry Hole informing an elderly couple of the death of their heroin addict son. Author Jo Nesbo skillfully weaves these disparate threads into a compelling tale, thrilling to follow with plenty of twists and turns to keep one guessing. I have been reading this series out of order as the books become available at the local library. I did not have any trouble following along -- these Harry Hole books can be read as individual stand alone stories.

This is dark crime fiction that does not wince from, for example, having a character's eye removed by a vacuum cleaner. I wonder if that was a nod to Gloucester in King Lear? For my taste, Nesbo's books can seem a little too close to Hollywood shoot-em-up movies, but he must do something I appreciate because once I start reading them I feel no inclination to give up. There are plenty of twists, and the tension is very skilfully managed. Frequently you are given the impression that something has happened, but the pages that follow tell you otherwise. I have no particular liking for the central character police detective Harry Hole - yet another maverick, alcoholic, loner cop - but I did enjoy the sub-plot here involving his former senior officer. One of the more unusual reasons why I enjoy crime fiction is less to do with probing the darker side of humanity and more about what the best police procedurals reveal about working relationships, chains of command and either obeying or breaking the rules. There is plenty of that in this novel, aside from the guns, drugs and sex. The latter may well draw in many readers, but ultimately I imagine that it is his ability to tell a ripping yarn that has helped Jo Nesbo sell over 5 million books world-wide. The next book I have lined up is another mystery, but cast from a very different mold.
