Not a great book but not bad. I felt like the descriptive language was repetitive and lacking depth. How many times can you call the grievers disgusting and squishy?
But the story was fun, fast paced, a quick read. Similar in ways to the hunger games but not nearly as emotionally gripping. I will probably read the next book on the series when I find a used copy. - Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5This is a fun little book, and I can see why it's grown in popularity lately. A little predictable, but I had some fun reading it. Might pick up the next one, but I'm not certain right now.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5This is, unsurprisingly, a far better experience than the movie, though I definitely enjoyed the movie well enough and found that it actually followed the book pretty well. It's a fast, engaging read, and worth it if you found the movie plot at all intriguing.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5X meets Y: Average dystopian YA novel meets LOST
My thoughts: The book is ok but I feel like it was meant to make you buy the 2nd and 3rd ones. Like it was meant to work best as a trilogy and not as a standalone novel. Who knows? - Bewertung: 1 von 5 Sternen1/5After 91 pages of frustration and eyerolling, I decided to forego powering through the rest of the story. I could not have cared less about the main character, Thomas, or any of the rest of the cast. I can't speak to the treatment of The Maze Runner's single female character because she was still in a coma, but the rest of the boys' mindset toward her did not bode well for her three-dimensionality.
The premise is interesting but Thomas is an arrogant shithead. He has no respect for his only friend, and his reactions are all over the place. Overall I would say this wasn't the price of a paperback book and I wish I hadn't spent the money. - Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5The slow beginning keeps it from being 4 stars. Other than that, enjoyable read once Thomas enters the maze proper and the plot gets moving.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/52.5 stars. Wish I could say I loved the book. Rare case where I thought the movie was much better than the book.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5I wasn't sure if I would like this book or not when I decided to get it a while back. However, after I started reading it I knew it was going to be good. It quickly drew me in and kept me reading late into the night. I love a lot of the characters. Hated a few (Gally- the shuck face). One part did piss me off! (If you've read the series I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.) Can't wait to read the 2nd book!!
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5I enjoyed it a lot. I liked trying to figure out the central mystery and really look forward to where it might go next. I will admit some of the made up slang bothered me a little in the begining but I got over it. A solid thriller and worth a read.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Best YA book I've read in a long time. This series has a Lord of the Flies/Battle Royale feel to it and is surprisingly dark and violent for a YA series. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next installment.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5I thought this book was really good. I loved the mystery behind it and how things were revealed just as Thomas knew them. I loved Thomas, the main character. He was brave and compassionate. I can't wait to read the others!
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Thomas awakes to find himself stuck in a dystopian society surrounded by a maze that can't seem to be solved. The dangerous, deadly Grievers roam the maze at night, attacking anything in their path. But the day after Thomas arrives, a mysterious girl does too who signals the end of their current way of life. Soon everything changes and the walls protecting them from the deadly, mechanical Grievers stop closing at night. After two deadly nights Thomas leads his team of teenage boys to escape the Maze. But only to find an even worse world outside ... (leading to The Scorch Trials). I enjoyed the fast pace of the book. Most chapters ended really suspiciously and makes you want to keep reading. I found myself putting the bookmark at the end of the chapter so I didn't see the hint they give you. I will agree with other members that the repetition of thoughts did get a bit annoying. There were a couple of chapters that could have been combined and shortened. I can't wait to read the rest of the books and then try the movies...
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5A fun read. I was reminded of Ender's Game and the Hunger Games. A lot of questions went unanswered. The philosophy and intent of the Creators went unexplained, and that was the whole point of the plot. So it could have been more satisfying, but I think the author wanted to hold out for the sequels. And while a super-talented, all-good hero is satisfying and fun, that can also feel a little thin.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Not as rich of a story as The Hunger Games was, but a very good page-turner nonetheless. The first book hooked me for the second, and the second for the third. I want to get to the real answers almost as bad as the characters in the story do.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5I read this book after I had seen the movie and because I liked the movie so much. The premise of "the Glade" was a fascinating one for me; I found it new and fresh. Even though I knew the outcome (more or less) of the first book, I was still hanging on every word of the book. A rollicking good read!
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Thomas comes up into a place named The Glade. He notices a labyrinth, which they call the Maze, which dangerous creatures roam.He enters the maze with Minho, and Thomas manages to kill one. With the newly obtained information, they head into the maze to find the exit. They find creatures that guard the exit, after a bloody fight, they find the way out of the horrific maze.
- Bewertung: 2 von 5 Sternen2/5Wow is this a slow starter. Thomas shows up in a strange place called The Glade full of boys who won't tell him things. The first several chapters are mostly Thomas asking questions and getting frustrated when no one will answer him. It's pretty tedious. It gets a bit better as time goes on, and while it doesn't really hold up well on its own (too many unanswered questions, and the questions that do get answered are a tad too obvious), it might turn out to be a good trilogy. I generally like YA dystopia stories, after all.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5An entertaining SF novel for the fans of Hunger Games. The well plotted 'base idea' makes the book a page turner and while the solution is not the most original it's well written enough to looking forward to read the other volumes.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Very much teenage fiction, but an enjoyable read nevertheless. There is nothing really new here (sort of Divergent meets The Hunger Games), but that doesn't really matter as it isn't completely predictable. I'd recommend it for fans of authors such as John Christopher.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5So there's a movie. Based on a book. And the trailer looked intriguing. So I read the book. Decidedly weird. The first half was one of the slowest frenetic jumbles I've read in a while. Slow in a way that a director can probably condense to 10 minutes tops. Frenetic in that lots of stuff happens, but nothing really...that slow part. Cute gimmick on the author's part...parceling out inchorent tidbits. And bizarre slang...never something I like...but after a while one gets inured.
This is fodder for a 20 minute movie that can be stretched with lots of CGI. But it was engaging enough to get to the "Are you kidding me?" ending. Haven't decided if the cliffhanger warrants reading the next. - Bewertung: 2 von 5 Sternen2/5Finishing the book didn't improve my opinion of the story. Unfortunately, my boys enjoyed it so we will be continuing to read the series. I keep wondering what is wrong with me, that everyone else really likes this series, and I am just not into it. I think that part of the problem is that I find the whole thing so impossible to imagine. Maybe I have a better hope for humanity, or as a parent I know I would never ever allow something like this to happen to my children. I also know that most parents I know would die before letting something like this happen. There is nothing in the set up to give me the ability to accept this alternate reality. With Hunger Games, I can understand how the world could end up that way. Same with Divergent (though to be fair, I only watched the movie. I haven't read the series yet.)
But with Maze Runner we are dropped into this situation that makes absolutely no sense, and gets harder to comprehend as the story goes along. Another piece I struggle with is seeing a group of teenage boys functioning like that to survive. Sure it implies that the creators laid down a bunch of rules, and that the boys know they are being watched, but nothing to indicate that the creators ever got involved in enforcing those rules.
I'm sorry, I know too many teenage boys. Sure there are some who would be responsible for a time, but to have a whole glade of boys who all followed the rules and work together for the most part without any adult interaction? Lord of the Flies was a more accurate representation of boys left to their own devices. - Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5Mind blown! This was a thinking woman/man's kinda book. It constantly kept me thinking, wondering, trying to work out what was going on. I only had a good idea about what was happening once throughout the entire story.
This was really good. It kept me interested the whole way through the book. I was cheering and jeering for characters and getting completely wrapped up in the story. I think this is one of the best plots I've read in a long time. Maybe because this isn't my usual type of story, but it captured me. I am very much looking forward to starting the next book in the series and am seriously happy with myself for buying the whole series at once!
Also, Dylan O'Brien is gonna kick so much ass as Thomas! Looking forward to the movie even though I know there's a high probability that they will ruin it. - Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5I was expecting an easy read of YA distopian fiction and that's exactly what I got. A quick read, clever in parts. The Grievers are pretty grim.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5Interesting science fiction book for young adults.
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5This is one of those books that sits in the young adult in dystopian world genre. In this book, we have a bunch of teenage boys, being sent to the maze, with no memories of their adult life. They don't know why they are their, or what they might have done to deserve this.In some ways, it typical, in others, not so much. I found it interesting the society this group makes, with law and order. In a book like this, I would have expected the author to go with a less coherent group, more tribal. The story itself is interesting, but its way to long for what it tells. There is too much focus on the day to day, with action only happening in the last few chapters. There is also not enough explanation - the book ends on a cliff hanger.Without giving spoilers, the reason for the maze is convoluted - and too wasteful. I can't imaging a society short on resources being willing to have the best and smartest teens killed. The other thing that baffles me is the solution to the maze... even if the meaning of isn't apparent, the kids should have found the key fairly quickly into their imprisonment. The writing is spare, characters while a bit above stereotypes - still fairly cardboard. The ending seemed too easy and does not actually explain anything. However, its a fast read and is exactly what it seems to be - a Young Adult Dystopian Novel.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5The Maze Runner by: James DashnerMeet Thomas as he finds himself in a box that is rising up. The only thing he can remember is his name. After sitting in this box for a few hours he's greeted by teenage boys that live in the glade. The only catch is they are surrounded by a maze full of monsters. Will Thomas and his friends make it out? Or will they be monster chow? I liked this book because it meets all my criteria. Boys my age stuck in a test experiment, fighting monsters, and finding out whats outside of the maze. If you want more read The Maze RUnner.
- Bewertung: 3 von 5 Sternen3/5I believe this is now my fourth young adult/teen dystopian novel. Some novels strive to give you details through flashbacks and such, others for you to discover. I prefer the former, but Maze Runner is feeling more like the latter. As I read, I fought the urge to compare this to the Hunger Games, Divergent, and 5th Wave. A lot of the first half of the book is set up. Kinda expected, but lengthy for my taste. Action was limited, even though the tension was ratcheting. It annoyed me that I made it more than half way through the book and they've detailed how ONE replacement word got selected. Klunk is another word for Poo, which is better than the actual word it could be. But they use Shank, Shuck, and a few others interchangeably and don't really explain why. They just do. And MC Thomas uses them almost from the beginning too. He's never really taught their swears.Knew the twist was coming. When they find the Griever Hole, that's like showing a gun in the first act. It has to factor into the plot somehow. Though to be honest, the more the book goes on, the more Thomas bugs me, the more the "Above Average" kids seem rather dumb. I suspect Chuck really was Thomas's little brother. That would explain a few things.Somehow, I expected the ending. Decent overall book, though not something I'd rate top of the pile. Not sure I am ready for book 2 just yet...
- Bewertung: 4 von 5 Sternen4/5Excellent book!
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5awesomely intriguing.
- Bewertung: 5 von 5 Sternen5/5So much more involved than the movie. Movie was good, but this book had way more adventure and plot twists!!
