Just like a roller-coaster, this was one speedy, twisty-turny, terrific ride! There were times when I thought I knew what was coming (reasonable assumptions), until I was shifted in my seat by a sharp turn and ended up going in a different direction. And like some roller-coaster enthusiasts, I didn't want to get off.This book makes three that I have read, and I have one more on my TBR Shelf, but he has written 9! AND, one of them is a memoir! I love memoirs. He truly has become a steadfast author for me. I can count on a good read every time. Must get more!!!BTW - In my opinion, the Barclay thrillers that I read, did not contain grisly, gory scenes. David and his wife, Jan, take their 4-year old son to an amusement park, when Jan disappears. There are a lot of things that just don't add up; the clues point to one thing, but David knows that's not what happened, and he needs to find out what did happen.It was very good. Fast-paced and interesting; I also found the "background" story interesting (didn't mention it in my summary, but David is a journalist with a break on a story). There were a couple of things I figured out ahead of time, but I still really enjoyed the book overall.

This is one of those books where you can't reveal too much of the story without spoiling plot surprises for readers. It is a stand-alone so you don't need to have read anything else by Linwood Barclay. On the other hand, I'll be very surprised if you don't go looking for other titles by this well established Canadian crime fiction author if this is your first.As he often does, Barclay has taken a scenario that others have explored, or that many parents have often thought about, and given it a strong twist. And then he delivers more shocks in rapid succession.

Cor blimey I loved this book. It raced along and I really was never sure what was going to happen next. By the time everything starts to fall into place all you want is for David to get everything sorted.Better for me than 'No Time for Goodbye' and I can't wait to read 'Too Close to Home'. It's fast paced and I really did find myself wanting to know what was going to happen next.You do have to suspend some sense of belief at times and it was possibly just a tad long but overall I couldn't wait to resolve everything. I simply wanted to know who Jan was.

This was agreat page turner! David Harwoods wife goes missing and he is accused of murdering her. He finds out she is not who he believes her to be. There are all sorts of twists and turns to this book and it kept me reading!

Linwood Barclay is a master at creating unique challenging circumstances for the everyday guy down the street. His latest book Never look Away is no exception. David Harwood is in a tailspin. His wife is missing and he is the prime suspect. It's always the husband, right? Of course, as husbands always do, he is claiming he's innocent and can't understand why the police aren't out looking for his wife, Jan.I read my first Barclay book, No Time for Goodbye, when I found out I was going to receive an advance copy of Never Look Away. I was hooked and immediately set out to find and read as many Barclay books as I could. As with all of his books, at least the ones that I have read, Never Look Away, has many twists and turns ending up down a path you would not have envisioned. When I figured out fairly soon what was going on with Jan, I as a bit bummed. If you figure it out too, never fear! There are enough twists and turns remaining to hook you into being a Linwood Barclay fan. And as in Too Close to Home even the guy who "done" it isn't always what he seems.

Newpaper reporter David Harwood has an unusual experience at an amusement park and now his wife of 5 years is missing. David soon discovers that nothing is straightforward and the case just keeps getting more and more complex. Barclay always keeps a sense of family in his novels and I think that sets his work apart from many other suspense writers. We can identify with his characters and their goals, even if we do not always agree with their actions. David Harwood is very human and fallible, but he loves his family very much. One of my pet peeves about Barclay's (and some other authors') work concerns his use of the POV of the perp. The solution to the mystery is given away well before the middle point of the book. Since I knew this from other Barclay novels, I simply didn't read those chapters until after finishing the book. I prefer to just sail along in ignorance and take things as they come. Although not my favorite Barclay, I enjoyed this novel and spent some late nights compulsively reading.

This is the first Linwood Barclay book I have ever read. I found it an intriguing read, with all of the twists and turns of the plotline. I didn't want to put it down! Though the ending was kind of "blah", for the most part it was a good read. I would definitely read more from this author!

David Harwood is a newspaper reporter. He's been working on a story about a for profit prison being built in his small town. The editor keeps killing his story, even after he uncovers some shady dealings with local politicians. But he's really worried about his wife Jan. She's been acting oddly lately, saying disturbing things and just isn't her usual self. When she suggests a trip to an amusement park with their four year old son, he readily agrees, happy that she is acting more like herself.What happens at the amusement park is the stuff of nightmares. And that's just the beginning...And on that note, I absolutely refuse to give you any more of the plot! Suffice it to say, that Never Look Back had me on the edge of my seat. Barclay has crafted a non stop roller coaster of a plot, full of twists and turns that I never saw coming. The book starts off action packed and just never lets up. Barclay's foreshadowing had me reading just one more chapter long after the lights should have been out...Have you read Linwood Barclay yet? If you're a suspense/thriller fan, than you will love this Canadian author!

Reason for Reading: I always read Barclay's newest novels.Summary: Jan and David Harwood are going to spend their day with 4-year old Ethan at the new Five Mountains theme park. After a few typical miss-starts when you plan anything involving the kids they finally all get inside and David gets in line to buy ice cream cones. As he heads back Jan is running toward him, Ethan is gone, the stroller is gone, she was just tying her shoelace and then it was gone. Panic set in. David sends Jan to the gates to watch everyone leaving while he takes off running down the path. With joyous relief he finds the stroller with little Ethan asleep, no worse for wear, but is that man running away from the stroller? Just happy to have Ethan back, they go to find Jan at the main gate but she's nowhere tofound. Hours go by until David realizes she is missing and the police are called in. How can Jan be missing? It's almost unbelievable until the police questioning starts to take a turn that makes David feel like he's being interrogated, then it all becomes too real.Comments: Another great suspenseful thriller from Linwood Barclay! David is a very compelling protagonist and the reader becomes just as frustrated as he is when the police start focusing on him as their suspect. The book is full of reveals which tell us just a little bit more of what is going on until the ending where the last final secret puts everything into place. I have to admit I pretty much had this one all figured out very early on in the book but Barclay's such a great writer I stayed along for ride. Funny enough roller coasters are a bit of a recurring theme in the story and that is what you are certainly in for with all the various twists and turns in plot, a roller coaster of a read. Ultimately, not my favourite by Barclay but still a strong thriller and a fast-paced plot that makes for a fast-paced read. I had it read in two evenings but if you have the day off it would make a great book to devote to an all-day reading day! Barclay's books are all stand-alones so jump in with this one (or any other!) to get your feet wet and you'll end up loving reading Canada's best thriller author.

She disappears in the park and David can't find anyone who's even seen her. When he is suspected of doing her harm, David's reporter instincts kick in and he learns that she is not who she claims to be. Barclay delivers another non-stop thriller. Just when you think you know where the story is going, he throws in another twist. Highly recommend all his books.

This is my second Linwood Barclay thriller after NO TIME FOR GOODBYE, and I thought this one was more layered than that effort without losing any of the intriguing mystery that makes you keep reading compulsively. I really liked the parts about the newspaper falling on hard times and how staff was dealing with it, as well as the subplot with the private prison and its diabolical leader. Some parts of the mystery were pretty easy to figure out, while others came as complete shocks, but aside from a very unbelievable coincidence at the end, I was satisfactorily entertained yet again.

You think you know the woman you're married too, the mother of your child? All hell breaks loose when the past rears up and the "wife" takes off with her just out-of-prison con/lover and frames her husband for murder. All of Barclay's books are page turners keeping you up to all hours of the night.

This is the second Linwood Barclay book I have read. Having really liked the other one (No Time for Goodbye) I was very eager to try another, and I wasn't disappointed.This is a very past-paced crime thriller and I felt like I wanted to carry on reading to find out what happened next.David Harwood is a journalist with a wife and child. One day his wife goes missing under strange circumstances, and the story is all about the investigation and what David eventually finds out about the woman he thought he knew.Linwood Barclay is very good at writing books where the main character thinks they know someone, but they really don't. He's also a master at creating a great story from some fairly implausible circumstances.I'd recommend this book to anybody who likes a good, fast thriller.

Opening with a scene ripped from most parents' worst nightmares, Linwood Barclay's "Never Look Away" morphs into something more chilling, disturbing and unexpected. Local reporter David Harwood and his wife Jan have taken their four-year-old son for a day at the local theme park. David and Jan's marriage has been up and down the past few months and David is secretly relieved when Jan suggests a family outing. But the day out becomes a nightmare when the stroller with their son vanishes. David finds the son but now his wife has vanished without a trace and all the clues point to David being the prime suspect in her disappearance.For the first half of the "Never Look Away" Barcley amps up the suspense, putting in place a lot of varying bombshells and red herrings for the novel's stretch run. David is pursing a story about the new privately owned prison that is scheduled to be built in his town and the behind-the-scenes perks for local officials that may be buying their vote. This subplot looks at the nature of reporting today and is fascinating enough even if it eventually doesn't lead anywhere of major impact to the story.We also find out that Jan isn't all she claims to be and watching this plotline. Jan's story goes from, at first an interesting one to slowly descending into cliches. It may not help that a current plotline on the hit TV show "24" mirrors what the backstory for Jan. "Never Look Away" begins with a four-year-old's fear of rollercoasters and then quickly becomes a literary one. The twists, turns and drops the story goes through will keep you on board, though as the ride comes to an end you may be a bit let down by the overall experience. It's a popcorn thriller of a book.

His wife seems to be having some problems with depression and they decide to have a fun day out at an amusement park. Ethan disappears while at the park, but is then found. David's wife, Jan, also disappears and herein begins the mystery. Immediately, David becomes a suspect and must use all his strength to find the truth.The plot is fast paced with lots of subplots. There are several surprises that are quite unexpected. It doesn't seem like one more bad thing could happen to David Harwood, but invaribly it does. At times, I couldn't see how he would make it out of this mess. But he does make it out, although, not unscathed.

From the earliest pages of Never Look Away, Barclay had me interested in the characters and their story. David Harwood is happily married to Jan and they have a 4-year old son, Ethan. Jan has been depressed lately, and David is worried about her. So when Jan suggest they spend the day together at a local amusement park, he's really looking forward to it. But then Ethan goes missing and so does Jan? What's happened?I enjoyed the suspense of this novel even though it got a little crazy at points. I wanted to know all the secrets and figure out why David's world has fallen in around him.

It took me a while to "get into" this book. The fault lies not with the author so much as with this reader. Certain types of plot elements tend to push my buttons -- and I quickly found that this book had one of those specific plotlines that I tend to avoid in books I'm not committed to reading.However, Barclay pulled me into the story in spite of my reservations; once I was "into" the book, it was a pretty good thriller. Barclay carves an elaborate puzzle with lots of odd angles that don't seem to fit together at first. Some pieces of the puzzle, I sorted out before before Barclay made their importance plain. I think this may be intentional on the author's part, as I found it quite fun to put a few sections of the puzzle together as the book went along. But there's no way I would have seen the complete picture -- how it all would work out -- until the end.

Yow! I wrote my review and forgot to save it!!! So here we go again! This was definitely a fast read, lots of action full of twists and turns that you just don't see coming. I found myself making comments out loud when I suddenly came to an unexpected event. The story is not quite believable but we'll let that be the writer's imagination at work but it certainly takes place in an awfully short period of time for so many interrelated things to happen. I would love to know if other people agree with me about a couple of things near the end---but who wants to give anything away????I won't hesitate to find another book from this prolific author when I need another action book---he seems to have a wonderful knack for keeping you questioning.
