The Lord Of The Rings: One Volume
J. R. R. TolkienUnsurprisingly, George R.R. Martin believes that if you love his “Game of Thrones” series, you will also love J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic “Lord of the Rings.” Though you’ve probably already read (or at least seen) the series, Tolkien’s remarkably imaginative classic is always worth a read, if for the laughs from Frodo and his gang of hobbits alone.
Watership Down: A Novel
Richard AdamsAs fantasy fans, you’ve probably read lots of books from an animal’s perspective, but “Watership Down” is a classic that tops this subgenre. Enter the rich, anthropomorphized life of a colony of bunnies on their harrowing journey to avoid catastrophe.
Lord of Light
Roger ZelaznyDid Roger Zelazny’s Hugo Award-winning novel inspire R’hllor, also known as the Lord of Light, in Martin’s own blockbuster series? Guess you’ll just have to read this sci-fi favorite about reincarnation and religion (specifically, Hinduism and Buddhism) to find out.
A Wizard of Earthsea
Ursula K. Le GuinIt may be a series meant for teens, but this fantasy romp from the late Ursula K. Le Guin is one of her biggest titles, well-loved by children and adults alike. Martin believes that if you love getting lost in Westeros, you’ll also love Earthsea.
The Great Gatsby: The Only Authorized Edition
F. Scott FitzgeraldVirtually ignored upon its release in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterwork is now regarded as a prime example of “The Great American Novel.” Martin includes it on his list of “best books of all-time,” regardless of genre (he doesn’t always read fantasy!).
Catch-22: 50th Anniversary Edition
Joseph HellerThis satirical masterpiece brilliantly captures the bureaucratic absurdities of war. With a title that’s become synonymous with an intractable problem, Yossarian and company’s tragicomic plight resonates to this day. The Hulu series stars Christopher Abbott as John Yossarian and George Clooney as Lieutenant Scheisskopf.
A Tale of Two Cities
Charles DickensYou may have used SparkNotes for this one back in high school, but now it’s time to give Charles Dickens’ work a full-fledge read with Martin’s endorsement of its epicness. Known for its classic beginning, it’s actually the ending of this sweeping serial novel of love and political unrest that will stay with you forever.
The Stars My Destination
Alfred Bester“It’s basically a science fictional retelling of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo.’ It’s a revenge story where Gulliver Foyle, the hero of it, is this brutal, coarse, uneducated space man who’s on a wrecked ship and most of his crew is dead, he’s dying, and another ship passes by and could rescue him, but they choose not to rescue him, they just leave him there to die. Well, he does make his way back, he doesn’t die, and he seeks out revenge on the people on the ship that left him there to die. And in the process of it, he transforms himself from this uneducated, brutal lout that he was in the beginning to a global billionaire and sophisticate and adopts identities — it’s a brilliant book, it’s a wonderful read,” Martin said in an interview about what books he loves with Read It Forward.
