My next novel is the first in a saga about techno-dragons in space, beast-headed ancient-aliens, magic, artificial-intelligence, flying saucers, and a reluctant hero, named Elijah, who gets pulled through a transdimensional portal against his will. Whoa! This is going to be helluva ride! I've been studying, collecting, thinking, and dreaming about dragons my entire life and I love the History Channel Series: "Ancient Aliens". As such, I've got some extremely interesting observations and analogs to put my pen to. Stay tuned, it's set to publish in late 2015!
Concerning my first effort at non-fiction, the: "Handbook of Hip & Knee Joint Replacement: Through the Eyes of the Patient, Surgeon & Medical Team" it took me about 16 months to complete. I donated 1,000s of volunteer-hours to the project in an effort to help anybody who wants to successfully navigate through this extremely challenging life-journey. My coauthor was a preeminent orthopedic surgeon in Denver Colorado and also the guy who performed my second Total Knee Joint Replacement. I wrote everything non-medical in the handbook from the point-of-view of a person who's been through Total Knee Replacement. Additionally, we had a wonderful lady, Dr. Francine Campone, write about Total Hip Replacement. I also edited the handbook (with some help from CreateSpace and Dr. Hugate, my coauthor). I designed, managed, and published it as well. It's available in eBook, Kindle and Amazon paperback. As of March, 2015, over 1,200 copies have been sold and it regularly garners 5-Star Reviews. We're very proud of it.
Next, and most important, I met and married my wife, Vicki, in the mid-70s. We've been sweethearts ever since! She's my greatest fan, harshest critic and forever-patron of the arts. Her hard work, sacrifice, and great, long-term planning have enabled me to step away (escape) from the work-a-day life and concentrate on the craft of writing since 2008. As such, my bio would be incomplete without mention of her. She’s my greatest love!
In my life I've done everything from digging ditches and land surveyor, running seriously heavy equipment, to Master Electrician - Inside Wireman (for many, many years). Those were my heavy-construction days on the big powerhouses. I worked on all four of the Jim Bridger, 500 megawatt, coal-fired powerhouses near Rock Springs, Wyoming; as well as the Fast-Flux Nuclear Breeders at Hanford, Washington; and lastly, on the helium-cooled, Thorium Reactor Prototype at Fort St. Vrain, Colorado. It was during those long, cold Denver winters as an unemployed construction-man that I started writing. As a side note, throughout my life I've always been a musician, sometimes professional, sometimes amateur, and sometimes just a hobby. The last few years of my professional career were spent supporting victim's of violent crimes as Director of Information Services for the State of Colorado sheriff's association where I supported and managed a statewide victim-advocate system.
My favorite authors (and this is an ongoing non-exclusive list), are the science-fiction heavy-hitters like: Ben Bova, Ray Bradbury, Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov, C. J. Cherryh, Orson Scott Card, Poul Anderson, Fred Saberhagen, Robert Heinlein, and Jack Chalker—to mention a few. Nowadays, I'm a true fan of: Bill Gibson, the Wachowskis, Joss Whedon, J.J. Adams and Lawrence Kasdan—again to name but a few. These are the masters I try to emulate. Also, I write what I would want to read. That's the best any writer/author can and should do. As to success, that's up to you, the reader.
Concerning war, I hate it and I say so! I struggled my way through—and eventually recovered from—PTSD from Vietnam. Over time after that 'conflict' I eventually had health issues that ended my blue-collar career as an electrician. As an older student, I returned to school and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado at Denver with a BSIS. During my college years I worked part-time as an AutoCad Draftsman for the Auraria Higher Education Center.
After graduation, I eventually became an Oracle Master, Datababse Administrator (DBA) and ran my own consulting business for years. During the last phase of my professional career, I obtained my Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification just in time for the Great Recession of 2008. My life has taken some quantum leaps and wholly unexpected turns, however, throughout all of my various trades, crafts, and professions, my love of music and writing has been a constant. So, to all I say this, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I started writing full-time in 2008 and from then till now, as long as I can get words into print, I'll be writing. Please take it from me, don't ever let anybody tell you to let go of your dreams. If you want it bad enough—you can do it. Stay positive, stay focused, stay tough, and keep your eyes on the prize! You'll make it—I know you will!
Lastly, a word about the future—not mine—but the future of mankind itself. If we—the human race—can ever stop destroying ourselves (and our planet) with brushfire-wars, religious strife, population-wide exploitation, and global pollution, long enough to reallocate our planet's resources—I believe the next heavy-industrial boom will be off-planet. First, we'll mine the Moon, then terraform Mars. Next, we'll mine and industrialize the Asteroid Belt and finally the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. That's a lot to write speculative science-fiction about, isn’t it?
So, when I was asked to write my bio, the questions of, "Where do I start?" and "What do I say?" are much harder to answer than you might imagine. The real answer lies not in this blog, but in my stories and non-fiction.
Thanks for your time and I wish you well.weniger sehen
